Mayor Miner appoints members of Stadium Task Force

Can you imagine the amount of people talking over each other on a conference call and don't even talk to me of the feedback and telling people to mute their line. Good gravy this is going to be a fiasco.

One banker, one realtor, an architect and a million pols and community activists. No expert in project financing, no contractor, no one representing the skilled trades. Bunch of bunk.

It's almost the size of congress. This should go well.

Which is why I called those two guys out and actually Mankiewicz is the SVP of Centerstate CEO as pointed out in my comment. Glad to read your input but not sure why you've got to go with the snark. Damn

My comments weren't directed at you sorry if you thought so.

Mayor Minor correctly involved probably all of the political constituencies & stakeholders necessary to be involved to take credit for if the dang thing if it is ever built. It's obvious political - Minor actually did a better job at bringing them all together than Mahoney did (and I am a huge fan of Joannie by the way) - and many politicians appointed won't do a damn thing either which is why it irks so many on this Board.

However, you gotta get the politics out of the way first - it's just how it is done here in NY unfortunately.

Like I said before, this all came about with the announcement to rebuild I-81 so new stadium traffic would be taken into consideration and paid for by the DOT when they redo the highway. That is the potential avoidable cost that everyone is trying to get the Fed DOT to pay for otherwise it would add many millions to the stadium project if the stadium is built later. If I-81 wasn't a factor, SU would have just kept improving the Dome for its remaining useful life. The secret drawings were contracted for shortly after the announcement was made by the way.

Finally Minor did know about this beforehand as many her staff knew about it for quite some time. What she didn't know about was Cuomo throwing the $200 million at the last minute during this years budget process. It was Cuomo's way at getting back at Minor for challenging him on kicking the can down the road regarding public employee retirement funding that had become dangerously close to being underwater that would have forced municipalities across the state to raise taxes dramatically. The only reason Cuomo was able to proclaim $200 million for a stadium as that was money earmarked for pension funding this past year wasn't needed because of the 25-30% gains in the stock market last year bringing public employee pension funding back to a safe margin.

Minor when she cried foul over a year ago didn't foresee 30% gains in 2013 and you don't hear her complaining much about it lately. Public pension funding is a ticking time bomb just watch what happens when the stock market goes down again...

No problem and thanks for the explanation. Your post makes the most sense about this whole situation that I've read so far.

Exactly. Does the expression "too many cooks spoil the broth" mean anything to these people?

He basically completely redeveloped Armory Square into what it is today, including constructing the center armory mixed use project. He's redeveloped almost half of downtown Syracuse. That's not some minor condo redevelopment. He's also an adjunct at SU and Le Moyne in urban studies and real estate development and a mentor for the Syracuse Student Sandbox. I think he has the sufficient level of expertise to provide input to this project.

George Curry is a great, great addition to this. He is just as much an architect of Armory Square as anyone else.

No disrespect to Mr Doucette but there is huge difference between remodeling some buildings and turning them into condo's and putting together a half billion dollar infrastructure deal.

I would respectfully disagree. I would hate to rely on anyone but experts from around the country in designing and building the actual facility and infrastructure-no one in Syracuse or CNY/WNY/Upstate has that expertise. Picking the spots and putting together the ancillary plan, like the pieces around the stadium, are exactly what the Bob Doucettes and George Currys have done and succeeded with in the past..in Syracuse...without the benefit of a stadium.

This is such utter bullcrap. Minor is a lameduck Mayor and she doesn't need to get approval from every Tom ,Dick and Harry. All she has to do is assert her authority and tell these various groups that she is going to take care of them as best she can. That's how representative government works. This "task force" is more akin to mob rule.

I doubt they will be able to agree on who sits where at the first meeting.
She shouldn't be allowed to hijack this thing. The city isn't being asked to be part of the funding structure, she needs to focus on making sure any costs that the city might incur are covered, any disruption or change in traffic patterns, and she has a part in any property tax deals.

Financially this is a State and County deal, she needs to stay in her swim lane.

I'm sure the Governor of New York State is pleased to know he had been appointed to something by the Mayor of Syracuse.

Yeah, don't know what all these folks are thinking! What we really need is a secretive cabal making all the major decisions for us as a community.

Sometimes, when you consider what's happened to this country politically since WW2 with the rise of the military-security state and how people are seemingly okay with it, I wonder whether the Soviets didn't win the Cold War after all.

The State govt is the same one that built the I-81 eyesore right through the middle of town with no local input and now the state is the one that wants to tear it down. Sometimes our "betters" don't know better.

Yeah. Imagine driving down Erie Blvd someday, looking up and seeing a new stadium and saying to yourself whoa, where did that come from?

You got that right - naming rights (signage) placed on that stadium will be seen from Erie, 690 & 81 traffic as it will stand above all of those highways. I don't know for sure but I suspect that is why M&T regional President is on the task force. In huge bold letters envision "M&T Bank Stadium". That is worth a lot of money in naming and signage rights because of where they want to build it.

Also getting your name first on the stadium is critical as the name sticks for a long time. People still call NBT stadium (formerly Alliance Bank Stadium) the original name P&C stadium for the baseball park facility.

M&T Bank already has a stadium, it's in Baltimore where the ravens play. NAples is on it because he donates an assload of money in the community.

I still call it MacArthur Stadium.

Steph wants a task force to make this decision for her. In the event it's a disaster, she'll now have a scapegoat.

It should forever be called "The Dome" regardless if it's actually a dome or not. Similar to "The Carrier Dome", it should be read as "M&T Bank Dome" aka "The Dome".

K thanks, good talk.

Hope they don't do a watered down version like they did with Destiny. Do it right or not at all.

Exactly...this will be horrible and will play out in the media.

Next up, The Feasibility Study. Let's put discussion on this on hold until 2020.

I'm expecting no concensus, DeFrancisco slowing everything down and a call that 20% of the construction workers have to be hired locally from underrepresented groups and s e x ual orientations and paid prevailing wage.

Another great point! Exactly what Dr Gross did when Marrone was hired. I don't play in this sandbox here anymore but it's how it's done on that level - politicians & high profile leaders covering their a$$&$ in case things go bad!

It's smart politically but it's why I've come to despise the political process - no one wants to take the blame but they all want the credit if it's successful.
