Me Likey

because he's a 1,000 yard back sophomore? IMO he's one of the toughest SOBs I've ever seen play for Syracuse. I think all of the 44s would approve of the way he plays the game.
I like everything about him.

He handled the suspension situation well. He didn't quit. He played hard all year. He was great as a Wildcat QB.

I just really like him.

I would love to see him wear No. 44.

Giving a player No. 44 would be a great story.

It would draw national attention.

It would re-focus the world of college football on the Legendary Syracuse University Football Program.

It would be a massive PR win for a Program that needs that kind of attention.
No it wouldn't. It's dreamland.

LOL. No it wouldn't. But if it makes all of us feel good, sure.

Allen is a tough runner and displays attributes of a team leader. Definitely hope he stays but man I hope he can add a bit more weight if possible. He plays really hard, I mean really hard. He has some tough miles earned on that frame of his end of last year and this year. A few more pounds for durability could be a good thing.

It would get attention. It won't be the death of Queen Elizabeth attention but it will get us mentioned on Game Day for sure. The media is still run by a ton of Newhousian folks.

It's a net/net good thing. It's not going to change the axis of the earth but it's good. Sometimes good is good enough

Not it's not.

It would provide a story for outlets that are dying for content.
Yeah, print newspapers, because the only people that actually remember Floyd wearing 44 are geriatrics.

It is a retired number. The recruits in the upcoming class weren't alive the last time a Syracuse player wore it. They'd rather wear a single digit number because that's what is cool to kids now.

We need to stop acting like it would be this INCREDIBLE story outside of upstate NY.

This sounds like a glass half empty approach.

That is not the kind of approach SU Football should be taking.

One of the lead stories on ESPN today is the news that DeSean Jackson will retire as a Philadelphia Eagle.

Wow!

Huge story!!!

DeSean's story is a headline because ESPN and other outlets are dying for content - any content.

The No. 44 story - the legend of Jim Brown - the Ernie Davis Heisman Trophy story - the Leukemia story - Floyd Little - a three-time AA who played next to Larry Csonka and Jim Nance.

The unique nature of the decision to assign the number following Jim Brown's graduation.

The controversial decision to "retire" the number.

There is a lot of content there.

So, I respectfully disagree with your perspective. I think it's inaccurate.

Hopefully we will get the chance to see who is right and who is wrong.

I agree on the upside. I think LQA is good and dependable… but he doesn’t have that extra gear. Should our #44 be caught from behind?

It’s in their pipeline to be made. They are currently knee deep in putting the finishing touches on 30 for 30: The Dan Mullen Thread
Can someone explain what 30 for 30 means? I know ESPN is making personal interest stories but the name just seems confusing.

I hear you. But...his durability has been exceptional, especially relative to the durability of SU players in general and most definitely relative to his work load.

Allen is going to have multiple NIL offers from big boy programs.

Oh completely agree. I actually don't recall him missing much if any time. Just thinking he could use a little extra is all, as he really likes the contact and a little more mass could just help him.

I get where you're coming from but I think LA usually puts himself in the "hammer" position rather than the nail. He reminds me a lot of Walter Payton in that regard. He welcomes contact and punishes tacklers.

It amazes me that he somehow always finds a way to fall forward after contact. The kid is as tough as nails.

This is why Syracuse has no traditions and it's unfortunate.

Oh well, we'll leave that to other schools. We've always been a little too cool for it.

Ehh not the only reason. Seems like an act of Congress is required as well with signoff from former families, university approvals, there is branding/nil rights issues as well for 44 to get thrown on a jersey. At least those were elements noted not long ago when Tucker was thought a strong candidate for it.

30 for 30 became a brand that they ran with. The original concept was to make 30 compelling sports documentaries in celebration of ESPN's 30th anniversary.

The "tradition" hasn't existed for 20 years. It's not a tradition anymore.

He’s a very different player than Sean Tucker. I’d be curious to see the consensus on who people think is the better player.
Yup. There are plays that Tucker would have turned into bigger ones, I think there were more plays that Allen extended more than Tucker could.

The "tradition" hasn't existed for 20 years. It's not a tradition anymore.

Konrad wore it in 1998. Daryl Gross retired it in 2005.

But yeah, at this point it's been 25 years since it was worn. We allowed an outsider AD who immediately crumbled the program to retire it during halftime of a game against a team we've never played before, in a 1 win season.

If you're going to kill a tradition, might as well go all out.

We probably don't even tell the incoming kids about it anymore. Nor the natty in 1959, nor the Heisman. Who cares, it was so long before they were born.

The "tradition" hasn't existed for 20 years. It's not a tradition anymore.
And that was a colossal mistake by Gross.

We should bring it back. If only because it's a tool -- one of many -- that we should have in our recruiting arsenal. Every little bit helps.

We don't need to be precious about it either. When I was in school Terry Richardson wore it and he was fine. But a shot of the hanging 44 jersey is a part of literally every SU football telecast. Might as well have it be active and use it.

FWIW, all the kids of my SU friends are hyper aware of #44, because we beat it into them (not literally). It's not exactly a difficult tradition to understand. Teenagers today do know who Jim Brown was.
