Mellen was supposed to be close but his designation started to get worse and worse after the first scrimmage. If Weston was out for the year I am sure they would have announced it today with the other two guys. Crease rat seemed to indicate Weston was somewhat close or at least in much better shape then Forkin was.

Academics?

That would certainly be my initial thought, homesickness could also be playing a role as well and leaking into academics. Hate to see him go as the recommendations from our alumni usually pan out. Would have been hard pressed to see the field this year though.

Could also have been a numbers game. Next year you have Lane, Bomberry, Trimboli and Dearth on the first line with one of Dearth/Tromboli falling to the second with probably Romano, Carlin, Simmons, not to mention the incoming middies who are red-shirting and the guys scheduled to coming next year including Lauder, Forkin if he goes back to middie off of his injury and god knows who via transfer.

If they lost Brandon Mullins last year it wouldn't have hit as hard as this loss. Mellen was a special kind of talent. Hopefully he heals quickly and is ready to go next year. As Jeremy said Mellen started as a true freshman so he can redshirt this season. Thought Mellen's takeaway skills were going to be the difference against top teams as he could neutralize their top threat. Now it requires more team defense. Will be very interested to see how the season develops.

mellen ,ben and salcido were our ACC preseason all conference players . so ouch that hurts.
