Melo to the HOF

I reckon Melo probably sees the HOF nod as more of an homage to his career in the NBA, rather that his 1 year in college at SU.
And while Melo was at SU, and when he started down the potentially destructive path of so many suddenly-rich young pro athletes, it was Jim Boeheim who embraced him and embued in him the values of maturity, good citizenship and philantrophy. Jim was the father figure for a kid who did not really have a father. I can't understand how Alan Iverson was more important to him.

Do you know Alan Iverson and do you know what his relationship was with Anthony? From the article above, it sounds like Anthony is appreciate of how Iverson helped him be both a pro athlete and the person he became. It was a different time in Anthony’s life and what he believes he needed at that time. It was probably something Boeheim could not offer and that is not to diminish what Boeheim did provide.

I think one of the reasons Melo wants to be introduced by his NBA colleagues is to make sure this is heavily tilted towards his professional careers.

When it was first announced that he would be in the HOF, I heard many podcasts and radio shows basically asking the question "if this is NOT the basketball HOF, but a NBA HOF, would Melo make it in? If you discounted his NCAA championship and his Olympics contribution, would Melo still qualify?" and it was a popular argument on sports shows.

I believe these talks had Melo to want his NBA career to be hilighted more than his college accomplishments.

Wow- I don't think I heard that sorta thing anywhere when it was announced, more about whether he should be a "first-ballot" HOF'er than anything else.
The man retired as 9th All-Time NBA scorer and some idiots questioned if he should be a HOF'er? Ridiculous.

This is 100% Melo's choice. It's his day. And when it was JB's day, he didn't choose Fred Lewis or Roy Danforth.
Lewis and Danforth are not in the HOF. An inductee is typically introduced by a member.

MJ was introduced by David Thompson for his HOF speech, DT was not a HOF member at that time. Everyone was thinking be either Seam Smith or Phil Jackson would have been more fitting but MJ credits DT for the person he modeled himself after.

fwiw, those conversations were the unserious types used to fill space, not actual debates. I’m skeptical they’d influence Melo’s decisions. I’m skeptical they even hit his radar.

could be.

but it was on ESPN, on Dan Patrick and on Dan Le Barta plus others. I don't know how one classifies "space fillers" vs "actual debates". Does SAS yelling into the sky qualifies more as actual debates?

Wow. David Thompson wasn't in the HOF when Jordan got in? I know his story wasn't pretty but man...that guy was sensational.

I think DT was in - it’s my understanding that people that present for the player are already in. Generally, you can be accompanied by someone not in.

Do not know if there is a rule but Thompson was inducted before MJ
