Mets 2019 Season Thread

if the 5 man rotation and the top four relievers perform as they should, I don't think it matters who fills out the rest of the staff. I like the old days when teams carried 10 pitchers, (with a four man rotation, the fifth guy being long relief and a spot starter), had 8 position starters and a bench with 7 guys on it. You could carry three catchers, have a pinch hitting specialist plus a couple of back-up infielders and out-fielders. the over-use of the pitching staff in recent years, (the number of pitchers used), has eliminated real depth in the roster.

Why on earth would you ever need to carry three catchers?

Last year we lost two of them on the same day. It's the most debilitating position in the game.

Sure but the fact that one instance when it happens stands out so much kind of underlines the point that losing both catches in a game is really rare. Having an extra pitcher, or an extra bench bat, is more valuable

Though obviously I agree the expanded # of pitchers has limited the number of bench players. I know theres an extra roster spot next year but I just assume it'll be another pitcher

A catcher can be an extra bench bat. A pitcher cannot.

the rest of the month will tell us for sure what we have. 16 games against the phillies, braves, brewers & cardinals.
7-9 in those games . . . which if my premise was correct, it means the mets are pretenders

The whole division is, so far. If the Mets can just get their offense and pitching going at the same time, they will be more than that. (And everybody else in the division is saying exactly that about their team. ;))

Yeah...can't say i'm impressed with any of the NL East teams so far...including the Mets. Each team has SIGNIFICANT flaws. IMO the first team to 86-87 wins gets the division. I don't see anyone winning 90+.

The Mets have also only played five games against sub.500 teams from last year. (Marlins&Twins). They've had a BRUTAL schedule so far. So the fact that they're afloat, even with the pitching crapping the bed is pretty good.

Agree. Can't say I'm thrilled about my Braves bullpen situation at all.

not to pump vargas up too much because we are not getting the innings out of him that we need, but last 3 starts:
era 1.93
whip 1.21

one short stint at a time, callaway and eiland seem to be rehabbing his confidence

despite the split, we have to be encouraged by the back to back strong starts from degrom & thor

Yep... but the flip side is Diaz giving up dingers two appearances in a row and the general softness of the offense. This team cannot get good pitching and hitting at the same time.

Looks like mlb pitching has caught up the Mets. Visions of last year running through my head.

Mets get two guys on with nobody out in the 9th. Then three straight strike-outs. two runs in three games. 149 runs in first 29 games, (5.1 per game).

that is 5 straight very strong starts from the pitchers but only 2-3 in that stretch

It’s called regression. Not enough high end mlb players on the roster. This might be controversial, but I don’t think Conforto will ever reach the potential he flashed when he first came up. He cannot hit the ball the other way. Nimmo is lost. Cano never showed up. Alonso is solid but I think the league is catching up... he needs to show he can adjust. Outside of McNeil, Ramos and Rosario this offense is just not there... just have to hope it’s a slump and not a reversion to the mean.

Conforto definitely can hit the ball the opposite way. He has had a bunch of homers to the opposite field. He used to hit it to the opposite field regularly when he first came up.

It looks to me as though he is pull happy right now and that needs to be addressed, but there is no question he is more than capable of hitting the ball that way. I hope the Mets aren’t trying to get him to pull it more. looks like the same thing is going on with Nimmo. It has to stop. Chili, make it stop!

Any coincidence that the Mets most recent window seems to have ended after they decided to not re-sign Colon? It’s almost like he was a good luck charm holding off all that darkness that the Wilpons bring to the game.

I'm pinning it on the Wright-over-Murph choice in the 2015 offseason. Clutching to a washed-up club lifer and letting a younger talent walk was crushing for a team with major financial constraints.

David Wright was still under contract during the 15’ offseason. He signed a seven year extension in 2012. I mean the Nationals really only got two good years out of Murph before he got old.

I think it goes even further back than that. Jason Bay. Letting Turner go. There’s a bunch of head scratching decisions that were made. The inability to invest in a bullpen. That’s been a constant thread.

They were insured for Wright though, I think. So they probably could've configured the infield for no net financial loss, plugging Murph in at 3rd and taking another crack at the pennant in 2016 before the window closed.

It's crazy how quickly the window's closed on talented Met rosters in our lifetime - '86...injuries and drugs and no return to the World Series; 2000...obviously; 2006...inexplicable; 2015, this mess.

The 'Pons gotta use that insurance money to recoup from the Madoff scandal. It's neauseating how they use this team as their personal war chest. They're completely content with spending minimal money to get a 75-82 win team on the field and break even.
