Miami cancels this week's game at Arkansas St

I thought Miami-Dade county was under mandatory evacuation. They are going to stay in Miami during the hurricane? Getting out will be much more difficult than getting back in. Doesn't make much sense- just head to Arkansas a day early.

Could they bus back, if they're evacuating south florida? Even if they don't evacuate specifically where the university is, do you cut it that close with a cat 4/5 bearing down?

Good point, but geeez, these schools south of GA will be cancelling classes well into the week anyways. So, no pressure to get back.

3 at once now and look where the new one is

The hurricanes haven't gone away -- we've just been lucky that they haven't reached landfall. Matthew was close (2016). But I'm not sure how long our luck will hold out, since there's plenty of heat. The hurricanes will be back. And they're only one kind of extreme event. There are plenty of other events that are costing us a fortune.

Well if UCF and FAU can play at home on Friday night and USF can play up in Connecticut on sat, then, yes, logistically, not sure why Miami cant play in Ark.

miami has issues since it likely will be much close to where it comes on shore. the other florida schools will probably have different weather issues. High winds vs 130 mph winds.

But you don't sequester a football team for the sake of 1 game, and a relatively meaningless one at that. Just like any other student, they probably would like the chance to gather some belongings and take refuge with friends or family for a few days. They can't do that on an away game trip.

we dont even know if there was a plane to get them out sooner.. depends on whether they charter or not. some of those plans are booked months ahead with little leeway to change a date.

There's a difference between playing at home and going on a road trip. FAU guys can play on friday, pack up after the game, and leave saturday morning if they need to.

UCF and USF are a couple hundred miles north, farther inland and not expected to see the same intensity as Miami. The University of Miami is a couple miles from the coast where the hurricane is supposed to be at it's worst.

It's a football game. What is wrong with some of you? A category 5 storm might devastate the home region of a school and you're whining that they should suck it up and play? I swear, sometimes I lose faith in humanity.

The hurricane is fake!/Rush Limbaugh

I booked my flights and hotel for the Miami game next month but today added travel insurance in case their stadium gets wiped off the map and we have to cancel the trip lol

Did Arkansas State get paid? If so they should shut up and take the cash. It's a meaningless football game in the face of what could be a major catastrophe.

Not weak at all. Depending upon the severity of the storm, the airports in S Florida could be out of commission for an extended period. Besides which, many of the 'Canes are from the area, and would want to be present to help their families.

they play in Tallahassee next week. they could have flown into Tallahassee. They need to evacuate Miami either way.

i dont think you get paid to have a home game.

I am no Rush Limbaugh fan - actually made the comment yesterday that I basically had forgotton about him since he got that 400 mil contract and tried to buy the rams (wonder if St Louis wished he had now?).

But that's not really what he said.

My understanding is that Arkansas St (their administration) did and said all the right things. I'm sure they're extremely disappointed. Getting the Canes to come to your place is great for a lot of reasons. Especially since they have a pretty good team that could pull the upset. But they took the high road. Offered up a Friday night option, but it was declined.

Humans on the internet are taking this and running with it.

I actually think it might be better for Miami to just go there, play the game, and stay there. It would be safer than staying in Miami, which I believe will be evacuated.

And here's a feel good story..

I saw on Twitter that Ark State offered the same to Miami if they came up for the game.
