Michael Benny the 1st to tweet about it. Story at 5

Syracuse needs to have its own domed stadium, retractable or otherwise, either on campus or adjacent to campus. Period.

Look at the situations at Miami, Pitt & USF. Not something that Syracuse should emulate. Even Kentucky & UNC have 20,000+ seat hoops arenas on campus.

If Syracuse has a 25k hoops arena then it might as well have a combined domed football/basketball stadium on/adjacent-to campus.

I was accepted at several schools with similar academically rated programs. Because I was a sports fan, on campus versus off campus sporting venues were a consideration. The location of the Carrier Dome factored heavily in my decision. I loved being able to leave the library and walk to the Dome for a basketball game or stop by my school for the pre-game festivities before football games. I cannot believe I was the only person whose decision to attend SU was based partly on the location of the Carrier Dome.

This thread has taken on a life of its own haha. People need to take a step back and relax. The original point i was making is that the students who may in the future attend some games shouldn't be the top of the board for decision making. I don't know how anyone could argue that, unless you are a student that actually has season tix for football.

Actually, your original point was that SU should play in a stadium in the inner harbor. Not considering the students in the equation was a supporting argument you made. Some of us disagreed with your stance. I know I don't need to calm down because I didn't get riled up to begin with when making my case. I firmly and calmly believe that SU sports should be played on campus.

There is not a stadium in the country where people don't complain about the parking and traffic. There's simply no good way to get 20,000 to 100,000 people in cars into and out of a single location in a narrow window of time easily, efficiently or cheaply.

The Dome's location is iconic and unique. There are lots of ways to improve the experience of getting there, being there, and leaving there. I believe the current SU administration will be the first one to meaningfully and successfully address that.

me too. for me it was between SU and U of R. SU had big games on campus, parties this way, bars that way. U of R had a ghetto this way, a river that way, and a giant cemetery that way.

It is The Syracuse University teams that we are supporting, not the Syracuse Chiefs. The locals who support the program will go where the team plays. They are life-long fans. They know their way around the campus' parking limitations. If you move it off campus, you will lose many of the student fans (who become rabid alumni, who contribute to future programs). Many of us alumni on this board LOVED the on-campus dome when we went there for events (and could not imagine the campus without it). I know locals sometimes think they are the only ones who really "support" the program. But there are a lot of alumni living all over the nation that "support" the team (by attending games in 'Cuse, and all over the nation, and through contributions to the program).

The number 1 choice (as well as number 2-100 choices) should be focused on options keeping the facility on University property. Yes they can move to a different area providing a bigger parking lot to pre-game, but it would never be close to the same collegiate feel. No students, and I mean no students, are going to shop at the mall before a game (who the heck shops before games anywhere in the country, aside from a merchandise store???). An off campus facility would be nothing but an inconvenience for the students.

That dome right next to the quad is perfect. Hopefully they can retrofit/add on to it. At worst, a move to Skytop.

Campus stadium or bust!
I would make this comment to your post...

The university should BUY the land by the inner harbor and create more campus buildings there. They did this with the design school in Armory Square and it has paid off bigtime. Think BIG...not little. The University could have dorms by the stadium as well. Why not think outside the box? Everything on campus doesnt have to be within 2 square miles.

Academic land for what? Which school needs a new building that hasn't already gotten one recently? If SU were to create a new school couldn't they use South Campus? Wouldn't it cost more to tear down a stadium, build a new stadium, and build a new academic building? Many of the dorms are out dated. Why not use that space instead since it would be cheaper?

Having the stadium on South Campus is more convenient but financially it is a lot more costly to move.

School should utilize South Campus like BC does with their Newton Campus. Move something that can be contained out there like the Law School. It would open up more space.

After just spending how many millions on a new building? Lol.

It paid off so well that Cantor didn't have her contract renewed.

They can write half of the costs off buying the land. It would be a wise investment.
I don't understand the logic at all. They just built a brand new building. Now you want them to buy more land and build a new law school somewhere else? Good luck on that capital campaign

I am all for out of the box thinking, but the highly praised and award winning design of the Warehouse was not enough to quell the uproar of the students there who demanded to be back on campus. The space is now mostly gallery and grad student studio space. The main inhabitant, the School of Architecture ran back to campus as soon as they pressured Cantor to finish their building's (Slocum Hall) renovation. It paid off as swing space, but not as a long term solution for anything. The main client of the university, the students, spoke up and the problem was rectified. OX is spot on.

Definitely factored into my decision to attend SU, and it's a big reason why I think SU was, in the end, the perfect school for me.

Yea...cause THAT is what caused her to lose her job. Don't be so obtuse.

The renovations to the Dome should also feature areas for Sport Management students at SU to learn. There will be a sales classroom and a facility operations classroom from what I've heard.

Exactly, law school is locked and loaded for about the next 30 years, give or take 91 million! ;)
