A lot of the positive vibes on the board over the last few weeks are gone after the USF blowout, so I'm curious to hear people's opinions on the rest of the year.

We're 3-2, 1-0 right now.

@ UVA - W
Pitt - L
@ FSU - L
@ LVille - W
Clemson - L
@ NCST - W
BC - W

7-5, 5-3

Yes I'm an orange homer, but I still have hope for a bowl game. I think FSU and Clemson will be by far our hardest games. The others are true toss ups IMO.

@ UVA - W

NC State - W
BC - W

I don't know what the hell to expect from the Pitt/Louisville games. I probably won't be able to make a prediction on those until after I see what happens this Saturday.

Gun to my head, 5-7

Remaining wins @ UVA, home BC

Injuries to us and other teams could change that

The rest of the season hinges on this game this weekend IMO. If we lose I think the rest of the season plays out like this:
UVA - L
Pitt - L
FSU - L
LVille - L
Clemson - L
NC State - L
BC - W

If we beat UVA:
UVA - W
Pitt - L
FSU - L
LVille - L
Clemson - L
NC State - W
BC - W

UVA is a very important game, but I still think we get to 7-5 this year.

I am not trying to be pessimistic. I'm just looking at each team and asking myself, are they able to pass the ball at all? Our pass defense is atrocious against FBS. 113th in passer rating. the teams we've played are 103rd, 36th, 74th, and 41st. For those teams to average 64th in passer rating despite getting a game against the 113th ranked team, they must not be very good in their other games. We make bad teams look great passing the ball. That's what our opponents are going to do. BC is a pitiful mess so I chalk them up as a W.

Not disagreeing (or calling you negative ;) ... But one of the things I'd look at is QB mobility, sacks allowed, and TO's.

The UVa QB is accurate but if you get to him, dudes a hot mess. Boise won going away because they rattled him into horrible decisions. He's like a better version of Austin Wilson.

And we won vs Wake and CMU because we were able to get there enough to offset our horrible pass defense - to allow our offense to win the game. That's the small margin/window we have going forward.

Aggressive D + Improving O + TO's

if we were good at rattling QBs, we wouldn't be 113th in passer rating defense.

True.

If our D gets beat on pass plays most of the time, but the other results in a big TFL/sack and/or a TO - you saw what that did to Wofford.

I'm saying given our horrible pass D, that's what we need to hope for.

I will agree that we've been awful with blitz pressure this year. Not sure if it is picking bad lanes/angles or lacking an element of surprise. It seems our blitzes get picked up so easily this year. We CANNOT give these kids time to throw the ball. They will and have absolutely pick apart our weak zone coverage.

i agree that given our horrible pass D, that's what we should hope for. i just don't like our chances. i also want to see an incredible amount of pass interference and holding. be like pitt basketball. hope the refs get tired of throwing flags every down

I'm sticking with my pre season prediction of 6-6 as a target.

With Fredricks as the starting RB and assuming they unshackle Dungey and get SU off to a faster start in the 1st half like we did against CMU, then 7-5 as an upside and 8-4 as a dream scenario.

Why? Unlike last year, we have scored almost as many TDs this year as we did the entire season last year. The ACC teams we are going up against, besides Clemson, struggle on O.

I hope we have more shootouts this year and fewer rock fights - win or lose potentially exciting roller coaster SU football ahead!

Lose to UVA this week and I can see a slippery slope. I tend to agree with you on how bad the pass D is and what it does to our chances of success. Going to be tough, sticking with 5-7 wins as that was where I thought we would come in, not going to be easy though. I would get Coach Mac in there this week for a gut check speech.. :)

5 is possible if Dungey puts them on his back. i don't see them winning twice before BC though. NC State and UVA are their best chances. Pitt will be ugly, Petrino will find a way. FSU Clemson forget it.

USF was an anomoly. . . . . em all.
I agree, it was one game. A very young team's first road game with a true freshman QB coming off an injury. They play calling was odd, but the coaches and players have pride and a great work ethic and will regroup and work toward getting better each week. I am going to guess we finish out the regular season at 7-5.

Agree with Millhouse, only win is against BC. I predicted 4 wins before the season and I'm sticking with it. I do think we look much improved and more like a real football team and next year will be our breakout.

That's how I see it, as well--with an outside chance at Pitt.

Everybody said that about Clemson last year, too. If we had any offensive production, we win that game in Clemson.

Not disagreeing with you but "next year" has been our year for 15 years now.

This week is huge for the entire program to and try to right the ship. Fans have pretty much chucked in the towel after last weekend. People like us, seem to be a glutton for punishment, we enjoy the pain. FEEL THE PAIN!!!!

Next year we return all of our skilled talent, Dungey will have a year of starting under his belt, and we'll return between 7-9 starters on both sides of the ball. Poised for a breakout.

That's a helluva lot different than wishful thinking "...wait until next year" hopefullness.

Lets hope, like I said the fans here, although we squabble, etc aren't the issue, we enjoy repeated sucker punches to the gonads which is the equivalent of following SU football, it's not for the squeamish
