Mike Hopkins opportunity?

Hypothetical... Hop, Red, or someone else in 2025-26?

  • Red

  • Hop

  • Someone else...

Isn't this the perfect opportunity to bring Hop back after the way he was unceremoniously forced out despite the transition plan? I'm curious how everyone would feel about that. Most of us feel that Red will be back next year, but this is so interesting to me. How would everyone feel about Hop being brought back for 2025-26? I would freaking love it.

So far your post has garnered quintuple stillettos with nary a like, a wow or a laugh.
Might be a first here.
Impressive.

I'm not sure if we will get a name coach with great prospects / pedigree. But there are a number of coaches who have been successful across America that were not glamourous hires.

Using the we might not get a great candidate excuse to preserve Red is flawed thinking.

nooooooooooo! You people always want a former player to take over here! Look whats its gotten us and look what he did at Washington. Someone with no ties to the program is the only way to go here, someone whos established, and who’s had success with the system he runs.

About the only former player I would consider hiring to be HC is Sherman Douglas. He has the gravitas. But he made almost $25 mill total as of 25 years ago when he retired, and he's 58 YO. I wouldn't do it if I was him, but I'm not him. Maybe someone should ask him. Perhaps the Coach Emeritus.

Had to LOL at this from his Wiki page:

"During his career, Douglas played against Michael Jordan 30 times and lost all 30 games."

Soooooooooooo, you would actually consider hiring someone who has not spent a second coaching anyone anywhere to be the head coach at Syracuse University? Why??? What color is the sky in your world?

To answer your three questions:

1) Yes, I'd consider it after proper vetting. If he really wanted it, I'd consider it.
2) He has the ties, the name recognition, the accomplishments. He was the on court coach ("The General", a nickname he earned) for multiple NCAA championship contending teams. He broke the NCAA record for career assists. He knows the X's and O's. He knows how to motivate a team.
3) Carolina Blue. Enjoy the tundra.

At this point I don’t think there is any perfect answer other than hiring some dude we have never heard of, that has “IT”. Do you think Fran knows bball?

That is a wild suggestion.

I'm gonna suggest that he doesn't really have "name recognition" with the people (potential players) he'd need to recruit. His name is revered by SU alums. And some announcers. And that's about it. Can you name the career assists leader at Wake Forest or Boston College? That's how 'famous' Sherman Douglas is. NCAA record or not.

Knows the Xs and Os? How do you figure? More than Red?

Sherman was never known to be a stout defender. But, suddenly he can teach that? What makes you think he knows how to motivate a team? Again—more than Red or Griff? Wild stuff.

If you said Andy Rautins, i wouldn't have laughed. I'd have pooh-poohed it, but not laughed. Sherm? Stop it. [My mother once dated his uncle!] I love the memories of Sherman playing for us—we were freshmen in the same class. But, the suggestion of an entirely inexperienced ex-player thrust into a HC role for us, after this current debacle... what that's just kookytalk!

We get it: for whatever reason, you're desperate to hold on to a losing coach.

But this is completely false... unless there are people that have their hearts set on Brad Stevens, or the equally realistic John Wooden.
A very bright assistant coach, credited with developing the top offensive scheme in college hoops, Luke Murray, would be an interesting name to talk to. As for a head coach who is a big time winner, no idea if we can afford so.eone like that.

Is it bad that I would rather have/trust MH as our head coach over Autry?

If JW really gave AA 5 years/$15 million he probably thinks he needs to give a qualified coach 5 years/$50 million.
