Starting this now. Last year we said it wasn’t an excuse and then it was when we started to get boat-raced in January.

I guess not for Gerry's first year. But I still don't understand how it's sustainable. How many whales do we even have and do they have the appetite to do this year after year?

The grassroots money isn't doing it. I'm not even sure how hard they're trying and that might be because the returns aren't worth the trouble.

And if we do have $12M to spend, how does that compare across the country, not just the ACC (which top to bottom seems like it's the 5th best league these days).

If there's a camp that's motto is "I don't want to give my money to pay players but I really hope other people do", then I'm in that camp.

Nil is supposed to be Blair’s strength. That said from my understanding there’s lots of new donors and I was told this Friday before Gerry was officially announced. I am sure there’s been more movement since. That said lots of schools are facing the same uncertainty.

There’s no reason for the ACC to be this bad. Overall the schools are more well funded than the Big 12 who continues to outperform year after year. First it was the players, but now the coaching in the ACC hasn’t been as good.

nothing. and i can't believe people keep saying he donated nothing here. as you know, he supported 6-7 athletes in the one year. 1 fball, 1 wbball and 5-6 mbball. clark was the fball, fair in wbball, who she thanked on social media. not sure who in mbball but i know 1 was judah. and long before nil, su used to send donors a booklet that showed all donors. i remember seeing his company in there in the top 5 i believe. yea, he's never donated anything.

It's not like the Lallys have covered themselves in glory over the past few months. Obviously they've donated infinitely more to SU than Weitsman, but they've now established their own special brand of pettiness and greivance.

I’m in the same camp. I freely admit my hypocrisy!

The Front Office Sports piece I shared here last week said that the expectation among ADs and coaches is that P5 teams will need $10-12 million between direct comp and NIL to build a tourney caliber roster next season.

Seems like the key to sustainability is getting businesses involved in recurring NIL donations. Blair is suggesting that in his comments about community support. Meier Creek looks to be the model for that in CNY.

I agree that simply hoping 12-15 people give $500K+ a year for kicks isn’t going to work long term.

How many teams without huge NIL chests continue to surprise? It’s going to get harder for those cinderella teams, but there are always a handful every year that show what hidden talent, team chemistry, and good coaching can do. And there are plenty of examples of big money rosters collapsing in on themselves. We should know, we had one of them.

There are like 5-10 BBall programs that will always be there every year because of the money and the prestige of the name. That was the same even before NIL. Duke and Kansas haven’t left. Michigan hit rock bottom and came back in two years. Syracuse can do the same thing. Gerry is a young, talented, and highly driven coach. It’s his locker room, and he doesn’t take shite. You don’t play D, you’re going to sit. I prefer to think that this is the turning point for SU. We had our rock bottom, we’ve just been there for longer than some other named programs. We have a solid coach and, if the insights here are true (and we know they 99.9999% are), the money to make us competitive again is coming in. It all comes down to getting the right staffing in place, the right players for whatever system Gerry wants to run, and then getting to work.

There is no reason we can’t be a perennial Top 20 program again. Winning solves most issues, and we need to do that in spades over the next 2-3 seasons to build the brand back again.

Have faith. We have resources now and a little bit of Irish luck.

And the other thing about Gerry. If he’s successful, he isn’t going anywhere else. Guaranteed that Schertz or Hodgson would have been here a max of 4-5 years and then off to blue blood city.
