Monmouth Postgame

I’ll just say the obvious. The team played materially worse with JJ in the lineup. We can’t afford to have him out there for long spurts if his a defensive liability, average on offense and the worst free throw shooter in SU history. He make Stevie Thompson’s free throw shooting look world class.
What were you watching? Anthony was dreadful tonight. He was physically abused all night. JJ at least looked like he belonged. Anthony couldn’t get by anyone tonight. Turned it over when trapped and ended up on the floor every time he tried to put it on the floor. JJ actually was able to get by people without ending up on the floor. Anthony changed the game when he went 1-4 on the foul line.

4-0 for the first time since 2017 is the stat of the night. What the heck. Ugly game all around. Glad it happened now. Totally forgot Betsey didn’t play. Hope Kiyan is okay. Here comes ALL the H0T Takes lol
I may be an outlier but I'm glad we had this type of game right now, vice a 30 point blowout! Nothing builds character like overcoming adversity!!

I love Kingz! New favorite player. Also I would not have had a problem if Sadiq would've knocked out a ref. What they did to him and Kiyan also was insane.
YO!!! I love his Defense!!

I dont wanna be that guy. AWWW whose kidding. I am going to be that guy. Told you so. Team is better with certain people playing more and others less and those proportions are not based on merit. This is the problem.

Weird game. We didn't play particularly well except for a few brief stretches but also didn't necessarily play poorly (FTs notwithstanding). I mean when you're up 14 with under 7 to play and then up 11 with under 3, some unusual stuff has to happen for it to get to a one-posession game.
I dunno, don't think you can take much from this result any more than you can take from the previous 3. I do know we have the pieces to be good, especially at the 1,3,4 and 5. I do agree that while JJ was fine overall tonight the chemistry seemed off.
Weird game

Thinking more. We just got shown by a garbage team that our athleticism doesn't matter if you are stupid and can't make free throws. There were 25 whistles at Drexel and 47 tonight on our home court which is pretty unheard of but still no excuse. We weren't ready for such a sloppy game.

The fork in the road now is if we get smarter and do the things that aren't based all on athleticism.
I just gotta say.. stupid?? Really?

Kyle needs to play more and I am sure he will moving forward.

Nait George was terrific and is settling in nicely.

Kingz was wonderful. Nice shooting and what a nice backdoor cut to the hoop. Haven’t seem that in a minute. Was a dawg on defense too.

Our FT shooting blows.

The refereeing was absolutely atrocious. Killed any game flow. That one ref had to be dealing with hemorrhoids or something, so angry looking.

I was not happy with Red. That final minute was brutal.

JJ seems like a great kid.

Donnie hasn’t posted up guys well at all in the first four games, versus this level of competition that’s concerning. He’s very far away from being an NBA ready player but lots of tools to work with. Clutch free throws were nice.

Kiyan was fine other than those free throws. Woof. Got killed going to the hoop multiple times with no calls.

Sadiq got screwed by the refs. 8 points in limited minutes is nice.

Missed Betsy for offensive spacing especially.

Zephir and Soure are great effort guys but both probably played too much.

Upwards and Onwards!!

Some observations from this absolute car crash of a college basketball game.

1.) Why didn’t we press more in the 2nd half, especially at the beginning of the half? We did well and gained huge momentum in the first three games by turning up the pressure and getting our guys playing aggressively, speeding up the other team and forcing them into turnovers that we turned into fast break points or easy baskets. We have to overwhelm the other team with our talent and athleticism. I thought we would do that but then Red backed off the strategy that had been working the first three games. Instead we sat back and got more and more passive. Was it because of the foul trouble to key players like Sadiq?

2.) The Refs were an absolute steaming hot pile of doodoo tonight. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more poorly reffed game. Called our guys for so many ticky tack and phantom fouls and then let them get away with murder. It was insane, and the game had no flow. Our players were all out of synch because of the constant whistles. The ACC needs investigate these officials.

3.) Omg, my eyes, my eyes! our free throw shooting was a dumpster fire hellscape of epic proportions. It felt like someone was stabbing me in my eyes every time one of our guys stepped to the line. Get a sports psychologist to help this team with their free throw shooting woes asap.

4.) JJ Starling is dealing with a serious case of the yips at the free throw line, and I’m terrified about what that will mean for us. I can’t believe the hitch in his free throw form is back! What the actual . He needs to see a sports psychologist stat. He was a very good shooter in high school with a good form, and his shooting form has just fallen apart in college and has gotten worse every year. Makes no sense. To quote Cher in Moonstruck, “Snap out of it!”

4.) I was excited to see JJ Starling return and to see what he could do. But then we laid this giant stink bomb. While he played well on offense and didn’t force things, I worry that JJ might be throwing off the flow that the rest of the team has developed. Hopefully he can figure out how to play with the rest of the team and especially Kiyan.

5.) Did Kiyan have an off game because of JJ’s return? How will he adjust to coming off the bench? He better figure it out because we’re going to need him.

6.) I think we’re gonna get smoked by Houston. Hopefully we can have a good showing against Kansas and the third Vegas team.

7.) My ears, my ears! Emeka Okafor might be the worst TV analyst I’ve ever heard. A literal toddler could do a better job describing the game action. I mean, he’s a UConn guy so I shouldn’t be surprised that he’s an idiot. He was atrocious and just kept droning on and on about Monmouth—when you could actually make out what he was saying. ESPN needs to pull the plug on ever hiring that guy again.

Has he tried hypnosis? Psychedelics? Half kidding…
Ketamine treatment perhaps. I don’t see how you can play a slashing guard who mentally has an issue with FTs. It’s just…not possible. He’s a negative out there given that. And add his defense being not as strong as others, he just can’t play. It’s sad but just the reality. If he was hitting FTs at a decent clip, I can see why him pushing pace and slashing helps us. But not if he can’t hit a FT.

We are better but we aren't really good. Nobody on the roster is NBA ready today. If you don't have pros your ceiling is limited. Also we all know in a tight game we are going to be at a strategic disadvantage.
Our D seems fine. Our O is not. Donnie is our alpha and he isn't. Horrible shot selection. Won't do the work required pre-shot. Microcosm of the whole team.

I think all of you would airball at least 1 of every 10 FT attempt you took in the Dome. ;)

Still, JJ’s FTs were unfathomable.
I’m winning the big Teddy bears at most carnivals I go to, no way I’m air balling at the Dome.

Is there a coach on this team that can teach how to make free throws ? If I was the head coach I would make these guy's practice 50 free throws a day till they could make a reasonable average. If we get in a close game all the team we are playing has to do is foul us with one of there lesser players to catch us.

Besides the obvious free throw nightmare, I am really worried about Donnie’s health, him limping is not a good thing to see after last year and Betsey in a boot is not comforting either. If the last 4 years didn’t happen, I wouldn’t be too worried about last night, but they did happen so this makes me wonder what we have with this team. They are certainly better than last year’s dumpster fire but are they NCAA bid better? Not so sure. We need to beat either KU or Tennessee (we aren’t beating Houston) or else we are likely toast and we will be shopping for a new coach. Very disjointed looking team last night, they played like they were looking ahead to Vegas.

I thought we gave the game away by our interior Defence. We had no answer late in the 1st and early in the 2nd half against their center (Turk or Greek). He destroyed Frermann. Only thing that stopped him were fouls, not us. We were able to take guys off the dribble to the hoop but not able to finish ir get rebounds. We will struggle badly against teams that have a good center that can kick out the ball.

Also, we did not have a lot of possessions where we threw to our center on the interior and he kicked the ball out for a three.

JJ Starling is not 100%. I tink until he is fully recovered limit his minutes.

Go CUSE
