A basketball general manager (GM) is responsible for many aspects of a team's operations, including:
- Player transactions
Managing player contracts, negotiating trades, and hiring and firing players
- Coaching
Hiring and firing the head coach, and working with coaches to plan venues and strategize gameplay
- Team finances
Managing the team's budget, including contract negotiations, vendors, and equipment
- Marketing and media
Managing the team's marketing and media, and sometimes acting as the team spokesperson
- Legal
Understanding the legal information regarding the team and its players and coaches
GMs need to have a variety of skills, including: Coordination and organizational skills, Strategic planning, Recruiting and hiring, Evaluating players' and coaches' performances, and Projecting outcomes.
Many GMs have previous experience in sports or were formerly athletes themselves, and have educational backgrounds in business and management.
