QB Danny O'Brien and starting LT Max Garcia are rumored to be transferring from the Maryland program. If so, they would be the 24th players with eligibility remaining to have left the program since Edsall was hired in January 2011. O'Brien was the 2010 ACC ROY running the Friedgen/Franklin offense, but struggled last year playing for Edsall/Crowton. I'm guessing O'Brien's decision has something to do with Locksley's hire.

Garcia (6-4, 290) may be of some interest to SU, as he hails from Norcross, GA, a state we have had some success in lately. I believe he is majoring in broadcast journalism and still has 2 years of eligibility remaining, although he would obviously have to sit a year.

Hmmmm this is interesting don't we have two scholarships open that we didn't use :)

Paging Greg Adkins.

Does the ACC have the same 'no-transfer' policy that the BE has?

After all, we're joining that conference some time in the near, or not-so-near, future.

We are still officially in the Big East :)

My buddy is a huge MD fan he said this isn't true what so ever and that the kid tweeted he is still a Terp. This was started by a guy named Dan Hellie and his track record isn't that great. If I am not mistaken O'Brien is set to graduate next year so it wouldn't make to much sense.

Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien, offensive lineman Max Garcia, and linebacker Mario Rowson requested and were granted their releases from the football program, the school announced on Monday.

“I’m disappointed by Danny’s decision,” coach Randy Edsall said in a prepared statement. “Danny told me that he’s not committed to our program, that he’s not ‘all in.’ I want what’s best for all of our players. Danny wants a fresh start elsewhere. I wish him well.”

They did just land Stefon Diggs who is a top 150 player. It's weird their recruiting, under ML was good, but the state of the program behind closed doors was not. O'Brien didn't like splitting time with his backup who played well at times throughout the year. He was widely inconsistent in the games I went too.

Apparently according to Bill King this is going to be a big thing with older QB's transferring. The Russell Wilson move has a lot of people thinking about doing it. He claims O'Brien can go from a 6th to 7th round pick all the way up to a 3rd to 4th rounder if he gets into a better program and conference. Not my opinion that's just what he says I think it's dumb to leave that close to graduation.

Grad school????

Edsall will NOT allow him to transfer (no release) to pending ACC members Syracuse or Pitt.

"One possibility had been Vanderbilt, where James Franklin, the former Maryland head coach-in-waiting, just completed his first season. Franklin’s presence at Maryland was among the primary reasons why O’Brien committed to the school out of high school in Kernersville, N.C.

But Edsall did not give O’Brien his release to transfer to Vanderbilt, according to an individual familiar with the conversation between the coach and player. Another individual that spoke with O’Brien said Edsall would not allow O’Brien to transfer to as many as 16 schools — 11 current ACC schools, future ACC schools Pittsburgh and Syracuse and other future nonleague opponents.

The individual, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized by the families to discuss details publicly, added that the stipulations for Garcia and Rowson included the same 16 schools."

I believe that the "future opponents" stipulation is common practice. The Vandy exclusion sounds like a personal issue between Edsall and the former MD coach.

So basically this statement is pure BS:

Stay classy Randy.

Once again we see players leaving a program following a coaching change.

Not uncommon at all.

Agreed, although 24 players in the first 13 months seems like a lot.
Anyone have a tally for SU?

If there is a coaching change why should the new coach get a say in where a kid can transfer to. The NCAA is so messed up in so many ways.
