Ultimately I think the day SU accepted the ACC invitation #2 will prove to be the most important in SU sports history. Others ...

04/07/03
01/01/60
Hiring of James Arthur Boeheim
Pearl Washington signing

That's my top 5.

And...
the day the Dome opened.

The day NYS wrote the check for the Dome.

Not sure if that is meant sarcastically or not, but the Dome was basically bargain basement price in retrospect and it helped keep the state of New York relevant in the world of college athletics. How ridiculous would it have been for the state not to invest in it and have one of the highest population states in America not be represented at all in terms of power conference membership.

Imho, the state actually should do more. ;)

Cheers,
Neil

So lets rank them...shall we?

8) 1987 Football Season (Pat Dye's Ugly Tie - Sugar Bowl)

How does Jim Brown coming to SU not make the list? Without him do we get ED or Little?
Ernie Davis winning the Heisman needs to be on the list as well.

Cheers,
Neil

It's late and I missed a few. Mea Culpa. Edit as necessary.

I put Jim Brown first because none of the other football accomplishments happen unless he comes here first. He's the best football player. Ever. And there's no dispute. That's a huge feather in SU's cap.

I might put McNabb number 10 because he did a great deal for this program recently as well.

Some would state that he's (one of) the best lacrosse players ever as well.

Methinks Ben needs to be on that list somewhere as well.

The day the board of Trustees decided not to demphasis football and move forward with the dome

Coach Fred Lewis and Dave Bing were responsible for turning BB around at SU. Prior to them, SU was miserable and in 1961-62 actually set a Div 1 record for most losses in a row (I think it was 19) on its way to a 2-22 season. That same season, SU's Utica College set a record for longest losing streak for a Div II school. Made national headlines.

The Manley Field House opened for the next season and Lewis was hired as HC. Bing was a freshman in 1963 (freshmen could not play varsity ball back then) and led the Orange in his three varsity seasons.

So, as far as BB is concerned, how can we ignore Dave Bing? Opening of Manley field house and Fred Lewis deserve honorable mention.
