Musings of a confused Orange fan

3 may be a magical number. Anything less would likely mean 0 P5 wins and he would have to go. I think with 3 that the cost to buy everyone out and then replace them is going to be too much of a hindrance to the athletic department.

I think it should be 4. If we lose to Albany, he is fired on Saturday night, so let's assume we beat Albany.

That's two wins. To show improvement from last year, Dino needs to either beat Liberty + one conference foe, or beat two conference foes. Anything less than that is stagnation.

Granted, I think stagnation will allow him to keep his job (when you factor if the economics of a buyout), but it shouldnt.

Great article. It appears to me that the coaches (on offense at least) have no faith in their players to execute (i.e punting with game on the line). They coach scared, not to win.
Nothing to fear... I believe it was HCDB who said, in his hiring speech, "Have belief without evidence, you will see the offense when it clicks and that typically occurs in year 6, game 4"...

Received a response although generic. Hopefully he truly doesn't just believe this is about one game.

we are all very disappointed and frustrated at Saturday’s score. A game we should have won. I can assure you the staff and team are working extremely hard to correct and rectify the issues we had on Saturday.

Best,

John

Honestly, I think he likely needs to go no matter what unless there's a fairly dramatic turnaround with the passing game which I don't see as likely. Devito has 240 yards passing in 2 games. A lot of guys manage that in a half these days. Dino has his chosen QB in his 4th year with 20 something starts in his career, a decent line and all his recruits at WR and we have the 7th fewest passing yards of any D1 team that has played 2 games. I'm sure someone is going to try and bring up that we didn't need to pass in week 1 as an argument...well we are also 116th in the country in yards per completion and 111th in passing efficiency so far.

Before this season I was of the opinion that anything less than 5 was a major red flag.

Unfortunately the staff has been working to fix the issues the last two years and nothing.
Where are all the changes we heard about in camp. Nothing. Same issues.
What was the reason to close camp. Not to let everyone know that you have changed nothing.

The only thing I think you can rely on in year 6 is Dino’s track record. It is what it is, and it is almost certainly a window into the future. I still hold out some small sliver of hope that this can be turned around, but old habits die hard and I fear losing and all the things that lead to it (as highlighted in the OP’s article) have become habitual.

Do people honestly believe that Wildhack does not know where the program is lacking on and off the field right now. I find that tough to believe.
I do not know, Mr. Wildhack appears to be totally unaware or unwilling to address lots of issues in the athletic department.

I was at 6 before the season and I'm certainly not adjusting expectation downward because 2 games in we performed poorly already.

I was at 5, moved it up to 6 and i'm staying steady. If we get to 6 wins that means alot went right over the next month or so. If we get into a hole not sure we have a team that can pull off a 1997 Syracuse like win streak.

Didn’t he change the defense with Tony White?
Tony White changed the defense, not Dino, maybe if Dino was only involved in Timeouts, and talking to officials, the offense would be better.

He understands. I’m glad he said he was frustrated and we should have won.

The generic response would have been more along the lines of it was a hard fought battle against a Big 10 opponent and we just came up short.

He knows.

What's so hard to believe about that? He is an ex-ESPN executive, not a former AD, assistant AD, etc. I questioned the hire when it was made and everyone told me I was wrong. First AD job, First time dealing with a football coach that he didn't even hire, and he completely missed the boat on the women's BB thing so yeah Wildhack doesn't get any benefit of the doubt either. All I know is he decent at is Dome reno's.

I personally believe we should be at 6 by now.

But...i also said entering the season that if it 5 and legitimate progress is made...and part of that involved a more dynamic offense…AND we identified our next QB because he got actual playing time…i could stomach one more year of bowl game or bust.

It’s hard to believe but I’m telling one and all the solution for most issues this team is facing (on the O side of the ball) is simple.

Play Schrader going forward, most problems then take care of themselves. The D is fine enough. Translation 6-7 wins, maybe more. Period end of story.

Didn’t Dino set out to install the new defense?

And then didn’t he first hire a DC to execute his plan, only to have that first pick opt out?

And then, didn’t he turn to White to install the 3-5-3 defense he had already planned to utilize?

Well he seemed COMPLETELY CLUELESS as to what was going on with the Women’s BB Program so I don’t believe he gets the benefit of the doubt.

"seemed clueless" did you want him to give you a full report of all the details? There were 6 sides to that story. I saw a company man taking one for the team. I highly doubt he is clueless about much that goes on in the athletic department.

Some here act as if Wildhack is on an island with nobody to answer to within the University, like he's suppose type of self employed gun slinger and that he calls ALL the shots. It's his department sure but not always that easy it has to be a bureaucratic nightmare with everything up there

He stood by Hillsman and have him a vote of confidence as nearly every scholarship player transferred out of the program. I'd say that's pretty clueless. It's his department means it's his job and his responsibility period.

So the support of Q in regard to the transfer numbers a few weeks before the Athletic article was all part of a master strategy by the University?

I'd say you don't have all the information.

I think you're just trying to throw every dart at the board and hoping to hit some numbers.

He's an alum, a football fan. I'm sure he's scratching his head on several things from Saturday's game. But I don't think he can unilaterally make a switch when there's a buyout involved. I'd guess he puts in his recommendation and the BoT probably gives him authority to move forward.

He's also not going to make that recommendation after game 2. We're not USC, with a coach who was on the hot seat for years and years while the cross town team is making all the waves.

He sees 20,000 empty seats, and knows it's not something he can just blame on Covid.

Agreed and he can't just fire anyone. Plain and simple. It's never as easy as most make it out here. It just isn't.
