We all realize that injuries have devastated us this year and that because of many factors including economic Dino will be retained for at least one more year. The question is does he have the ability build a program. Is he a long term solution or another failure. Personally im on the fence. On one hand i see a charismatic leader. On the other a good guy who has more flash than substance. The remaining games will let everyone know if he has lost the team. If not i believe we will win 7 next year.
Dinos La Familia is going to be put to the test. For the good of the program i hope he can keep it together.

The guy is in over his head. The press conferences are embarrassing. The play from team on the field is ACC level. The only reason we cannot cut bait at this time is because of the buyout cost.

There are enough cupcake games in college football. We've all seen teams that are out-manned, but are still well-coached. Even when those out-manned teams get beat by 3+ TDs, your average fan can usually say 'that underdog was pretty well coached' when they come ready to play.

This year, I think it's fine to be outmanned. Injuries, opt-outs, and transfer decisions have not gone our way.

Even so, outside of a few quarters of football, I doubt many people are looking at Cuse and saying 'that's a well coached team'.

Dino will get another year because he has to, but none of us should really be excited about it.

The recruiting class coming in is good.

I am really curious on his success to recruit back seniors who now have have +1 eligibility. THAT will be something to watch, especially since he openly campaigned for them to be "the bridge."

I still believe Dino can be a success.

The COVID has exposed the Program’s inherent weakness - lack of quality depth - a longstanding problem.

But the frosh give me hope.

Hopefully. We have lacked depth at LB for two seasons, and just now finally have depth. We have been too young at LB last year and this. We have lacked depth on the OL for three years and have been too young the last two as well. We have lacked depth at DL the last two years. Thank goodness Bear came back this year. We have lacked talent at WR the last three years. We have lacked talent and depth at QB. RB and DB have been good. LB now seems to be good. There are a lot of holes that need to be filled and will take more than just the next class.

we have to hit the portal, if we can bring in quality players in the areas you mention(QB, WR, OL,DL) we can be a pretty good team next year.

I would agree with most of this.

The albatross is the QB position. What is hi answer/excuse to the question of “Why is Rex Culpepper the only viable upperclassman backup behind the golden boy?”

We won’t ever get an answer publicly but it is a joke

I agree that lack of quality depth has been exposed. But is it COVID that exposed it, or just some bad luck?

RB is really our only "COVID" opt out casualty position, and based on everything I've read here, it sounds like other forces were at play.

My two cents are this, we have never paid a coach more then Dino is getting, and 4 of his 5 years have been dumpster juice. He had two big wins outside that 10 win season. He rode the coattails of Eric Dungey and those seniors and they made him a lot of $$ and extra years on his contract. I have said on other threads I have been a second ticket holder since 1996, I have constantly traveled to several away games a year since that time, and at no time have I ever been so dissatisfied. Yes that includes when Grob was here. He was horrible, and quite frankly he had poor talent, but at least you knew that going in and they did play for him. They were simply not talented enough and he was not a good coach. But I remember being in Lville when Syracuse was 0-3 and not competitive against their first three opponents but shocked a much more talented Louisville team. I was also at Notre Dame when he was a lame duck coach and beat them. This team has players quitting, flipping off cameras, making stupid mistakes, it’s just horrible and the product on the field is ridiculous. And it falls squarely on this coaching staff.

Super solid points.

I just have a hard time being more dissatisfied than the GRob years. I cannot imagine saying that having gone to Syracuse games since 1981.

GRob took a program that was eroding but respect and brought it to 1-10 status year one and he recruited poorly.

Babers took a program that Shafer ISIS’d downward post Marrone and won with Hugh integrity players. He had epic wins in the first two seasons and then a 10-3 year. Past two years have been terrible, but his Wikipedia page in Syracuse Football lore blows away Robinson at every level.

I can’t disagree with that either, I guess I am just more disgusted because when we hired Robinson it was evident quickly he just didn’t have it, and his salary was a fraction of what Dino is bringing in, yes I know it’s many years later and inflation. Dino hasn’t punted on third down yet, but he makes plenty of decisions that make no sense. He wastes time outs at the most bizarre times, we go for it on 4th down sometimes and then when it’s obvious we should do it another he punts. We play Pitt he basically gives up, we play Wake Forest and it’s obvious to the masses he waits too long to pull Rex and then says “ we are trying to win the game” when it’s clear the game has long since been decided. And yes the scrubs were in against Morgan but nobody can tell me he didn’t look a thousand times better then Rex did. Morgan should have had at least 3 more possessions minimum. This is year 5 and we look like a joke, I watch Rutgers two weeks in a row and Schiano has them playing hard, playing with discipline and looking like the future is bright in year 1. Maybe this won’t age well, and you know what I hope I am wrong, but it’s obvious to this guy that Dino Babers is not the answer.

What position do we have upperclassmen? Normally a new HC will bring in his guys in the recruiting classes after year 1 and year 2 (the first class is a transition class). Then he will play those guys early so he has a young team in year 3 which turns into an old team in year 5. This year our roster looks more like a year 3 roster than a year 5 roster. Why is that? He needs to be held accountable for that not just the QB position.

That is such a red flag though. Sure a new HC should need to hit the portal to rework the roster. But a HC who is going into year 6 should not need to.

agree but that 6th year coach needs to

Probably right though I was including impact on practice time

Agree with that. It certainly impacted us because of the change of coordinators. Part of why Wildhack will show patience.

The portal is a legit avenue fpr most schools now. Should Oklahoma have had to do that to get their starting QB three years in a row? At the level they have consistently been at, I would say no, but they did that anyway. We're nowhere near their level, so the portal should be something we utilize regularly.

We should utilize it but we shouldn't need to get half a dozen guys each year to fill poor recruiting strategies (roster makeup) or misses. We need a solid base of HS kids and sprinkle in some transfers. Even transfers you don't know how they will perform (see Alexander). Plan A shouldn't be the portal it should be Plan B.

The coaching staff aren't the ones declaring a need to hit the portal, that's fans saying that. If (big if)we start next summer with nearly every scholarship player healthy, we will have a full roster with quality depth at every position. That being said, we probably need a couple of transfers to fill in, particularly DL, but not for wholesale roster changes like some on here are saying.

Plan A is the HS kids and we have a base of those. Look at the best players on the roster, they're all our youngest guys that we got out of HS. RBs, the LBs, the secondary. We're bringing a bunch of dlineman and olineman in the next class. When people are talking about trsfs it's a dlineman, a QB, and a WR. That's far from a half dozen guys and that may not all be necessary. We have WRs coming in the next class that may help immediately.

I think there should be six sources of talent in US college athletics and all of them should be used:
- high school graduates
- drop-outs who have been playing semi-pro
- foreign players
- JUCO transfers
- the transfer portal from four year schools, (I assume that grad transfers are now part of this group
- Guys who left with eligibility years left, have played pro ball but want to come back to get a degree and re-start their careers or just play the game for another year before it gets real.

Why not?

We have a young base now. The issue is there are gigantic holes in the upper class. Next year is year 6 not year 3.

-Firing both coordinators last year was a huge red flag.
-Lack of QB depth and development in year 5.
-Disproportinately large number of season ending injuries seemingly every year suggests there is a problem with our approach to strength and conditioning.
-Poor clock management, play calling and and game management.
-4 out of 5 losing seasons.

For the amount of coin he's being paid, this program deserves a heck of a lot better. I understand he's not going anywhere next year but, I've seen enough. He's not the guy. A nice man who is in over his head IMHO.
