It seems everybody is telling some cool/memorable Atlanta stories, so I figured I would chime in with mine as well.
My 3 friends and I set out early Saturday morning for Atlanta. On the way down through South Carolina and Georgia, we ran into so many Syracuse fans on the drive down. We had a SU Jersey in the window of my car, so we had many honks and fist pumping on the way down.
We parked at a Marta station and took the train into Atlanta. We got to Hudson Grille and bought about 12 6 packs of Natty Ice and parked outside at a table. It was fun talking with other SU fans and listening to everyone boo as Michigan fans walked by the outside seating area. The funny story of the pre-game drinking occurs here. My friend (who looks to me for a lot of SU basketball history/recruiting) had drank a decent amount and was getting close to being drunk. He saw someone taking pictures with SU fans and asked me if it was a former player (it was Lawrence Moten). I turned to my (other) friend and asked if I should mess around with him right now. After getting the ok, I said, "yeah man, that's Preston Shumpert!". SO excited, he starts up a **Preston Shumpert clap clap clap clap clap** chant. I'm dying laughing as other people are looking at him like, what the hell are you talking about. He was pretty pissed but it also got him to sober up a bit before the game.
Got to the Georgia Dome before the Louisville/WS game. I loved out seats. We were section 334, row 1. It was nice not having any seats in front of us. As SU started warming up, all four of us were standing and chatting with the Michigan fans next to us. They were very respectable and fun to talk to. As we get near the tip, we stand up and start clapping (ya know, what SU fans are known to do) and we immediately get tapped on the shoulder by a middle aged woman who had two young kids with her. They were not wearing any team specific colors and seemed like they were there to just watch basketball (more on this in a bit). After getting tapped on the shoulder (you know where this is going), the woman asks us "Can you guys please sit down, I can't see." My friend replies, "This is Syracuse basketball, we stand until the first basket is made, i suggest you stand and clap too." The woman did not like it, but her little kids loved the idea. They immediately stood up and clapped right along with us. Editors Note: The only thing that sucked was I felt bad standing during the game during big moments because I was in the front row of 334. I didn't want to block anybody's view.
As the game went on, these two younger kids ended up sitting next to us away from their mother. I would put them both in the 10-12 age range. As the game went on, they were getting more and more in the game and cheering on Syracuse. They were yelling "Go Orange", banging on the metal right below the railings with us, they were so drawn into the game. They were giving us high fives after made baskets during the comeback. After Southerland hit his 1st 3 pointer, they were screaming louder than us. It was such a fun time watching them. After SU lost, they sat there in silence with us. One of the little boys asked us, "what happens now?". I looked at him and said you buy a lot of orange colored clothing and route for SU no matter what. That's what real fans do. He then looked at his mom and asked if he could get a Syracuse shirt. I didn't hear her reaction, but I couldn't help but feel responsible for bringing two youngins into the Syracuse family. If there is anything to take away from this game, it's that.
I won't bore you with the rest of the details from my night, I'll just say it ended with a lot of alcohol, and ending up at a really disgusting strip club with 4 females wearing Louisville clothing we met on the way out. That's probably another post served for the OT forum.
As always, Go Orange. Can't wait for football season!
