My issue with the offense

could be. The one time i saw a roll out was against wake forest. It was a 3rd down play. he was trying to throw the out pass to Broyld right by their sideline but he didnt complete it. It wasnt even close. I couldnt tell if the ball was tip or not. I replayed it over and over again. Still couldnt figure it out.
That was the obvious PI against Broyld that wasn't called.

i don't want to see any rollouts. don't ask hunt to do more than he is. the offensive line is fine

stay low risk, throw bubbles when you get them, and use his legs on draws.

basically the rj anderson offense with more bubble screens if they're there.

you don't need to cut the field in half to make it easy for a qb. you can still be some basic one read from the pocket. start pulling too many defenders into half the field with Hunt airmailing the ball on the run will just lead to interceptions.

at this point, just accept that the offense is going to be limited and get Hunt his reps on the basic stuff

I hear what you saying millhouse but he is getting tougher reads on 3rd down plays. The bootpass is not much to read. All im saying is why not use his strength. If he cant throw let him boot and run with it. if the boundary player come up to stop him from running then dumb a short pass over their heads. Simple football. But I hear what you saying.

He's better than that. I don't think he or the WR's are getting put in the best positions with the way the offense is being run. It's surprising how well the run game is going considering how poor the pass offense has been.

The one smart thing they have done is use the pass on first down well. It has helped them stay on schedule. And protection has been excellent, and Hunt has been smart, in obvious passing downs. Very few sacks this year.

i'm all for him running like he's been doing very well. i'd just rather have it come in boring old quick draws up the middle rather than some slower developing rollout

hunt has turned me into a meathead. gotta avoid turnovers at all costs. i have to go and eat some raw meat, i haven't eaten in almost 15 minutes.

I agree you don't need to cut the field in half exclusively and that there are plenty of simple reads from the pocket. All I'm saying, and pretty much echoing others is take advantage of Hunts strength. I think we can all agree that at this point it's his elusiveness and legs for the most part.

You don't need to cut it in half 10 times, but 2/3 times a game will get you easier reads in a closer proximity. And that can be done without the defense overloading the side if you mix it into the gameplan. Then, if you do catch them overloading have something backside.

I think it's a positive bc hunt can play the defender assigned to the flats, pump fake and run or draw him in and dump off. Then you've got the intermediate and deep routes to play with when they try to support the flat defender. Then if they overload have something backside, ala TE throwback.

They get paid for doing this. I'm just having fun discussing something other than uni's, buttgers or point spreads.

Exactly what have we seen in Hunt that makes him better than RJ? RJ at least had a chance to hit a downfield pass I don't think Hunt can do that without getting lucky or the receiver making an amazing play on the ball. Hunt is a better runner... I'll give you that.

i don't even know if they trust qbs to make vertical throws. they just want to get DBs the hell out of the way of the running game by WR to the endzones and sidelines.

chip mentioned this weeks ago, he called it
That's not a bad strategy... I wish the Bills would do that with EJ.

They can play action out of the pistol/zone read look. The wheel and pop pass are always there, they ran it against NW for a TD, and I haven't seen much of that play since. It was the single biggest play in the playbook last year.

We ran it against Georgia Tech and the LB intercepted it. Granted, it was a great play by the LB. But still, Lester mentioned in that one video after that game, that Hunt needed to make that pass quicker, he hesitated, and that the LB shouldn't have had a chance. It's things like that, that I think are keeping it scaled down. But based on how he can churn yards with his legs, he's still the best option to play.

this year is so much like 2001

older qb who can't stop throwing interceptions starts the year for a couple games

younger guy who can't throw and isn't very fast but has good running instincts runs hard and the scaled down offense gets just enough to win with a good defense (good this year, great then)

this team even has an epic 50something to nothing blowout on the road of a southern acc school (GT ain't miami but work with me here)

this week is our holy crap road win (VT back then FSU this week) BOOK IT

While we're at it, let's have FSU suspend their best defensive player for academic reasons. Then we can have back to back years in which we become bowl-eligible on the road against a team we're not supposed to beat.

The one issue I have, and will always have, with the way the offense is run is this.

Let's say we have a QB who is shaky. We don't want him throwing a lot. Maybe 15-17 passes a game because we don't feel confident he can get the job done.

Why then does it make sense to have most of throws come on 3rd and long, which is exactly when the defense is playing almost exclusively pass?

Better, I say the majority of those throws should come on 1st or 2nd, when the defense will be guessing. Make them short safe passes if you want, but you are far more likely to generate a higher percentage of completions when the defense is thinking run then when the defense is committing to pass.

This isn't a HCSS thing...Ive been arguing this for years.

Right, thats why Play Action pass plays are so important. But we dont run them for some reason. The boot pass will help.

Is Jamal Riddle going to be returning punts for us this weekend? I totally forgot about that game and how fun it was.

Hunt is barely adequate in the pocket in terms of accuracy... how bad is he on the run?

Exactly. The possibility of over or under throwing the receiver goes up exponentially on a roll out. If you've got a QB who is not very accurate to start with, you keep him in the pocket.
