Cold, crisp night close to Christmas. Not a very good turnout. Of course, the students were not there either. The SSS was temporarily replaced by a huge pep band supplied by Baldwinsville HS. They did quite a credible job filling in. Props to them.

Props also to the young girl who sang the NA. I think her name was Katie Musxxxxxxxxxx, where the last name sounded really Italian. She started off her acapella rendition a pitch a little too high, made a smooth change to the right key and sang the heck out of that old British drinking song. Whatever her name is, she has mad skills.

Another poor effort by the person who had a chance to win the neon green recliner chair. I am starting to think people are missing on purpose. The color is that ugly.

Dion came out in warmups with a heavy wrap on his left hand. It appeared to focus on protecting his thumb. I am sure many have discussed this. Just in case it has been ignored, this was surely the reason Waiters played so little. That and the fact that the game was a blow out in short order. I think Brandon is also still not 100%, which is why he played limited minutes as well tonight.

Whoever it was that had a feeling Rakim was going to have a good day today made a great call. December 20th is indeed the Christmas season and he played very well today. Probably one of the reasons we rebounded much better today. Rak had a lot of potential...I am really glad to see him get some PT and make a major contribution. Hopefully his playing time the rest of the season will no longer be a farce. We could really use a strong rebounding PF with the ability to block shots from the weak side and consistently finish inside.

With the injuries to the top 2 guards, MCW also had a lot of playing time today. Thought he had an up and down performance...made some uncharacteristically bad passes and showed some questionable judgement. IthacaMatt, you jinxed our boy. Playing a lot of minutes against a pretty darn good team will help Mike in the long run.

KJ had another quietly excellent performance tonight. I think he is having a terrific year. He has always been capable of outstanding play but up until this season, his career has been characterized by really inconsistent play. He has had an astonishing number of games where he gets goose egged one half and goes crazy in the other (usually playing better in the 2nd half). Almost never puts together two solid halves. Until this season. Given our struggles in half court play on offense, we really need him to be consistent, and he has really been money for us so far, and he has also been very good in clutch situations to date, again something he has rarely done in the past.

Scoop had a fine game, again seems to be at his best shooting in precarious situations, just about to travel, get his shot blocked, not squared to the basket, etc. Might be the only player I have ever seen who consistently shoots better when shooting bad shots than he does shooting good shots. That dude has a weird game, always has and always will.

Thought Bucknell actually attacked the zone quite well, especially early in the 2nd half, got a lot of quality shots and if they were able to make all the bunnies they missed, it might have been a game well into the 2nd half. Must have been very frustrating for them.

The Bisons were really small and we were often able to just shoot over them to get good shots. They really worked to clog the lane and force us to shoot 3s. We got the ball inside anyway and kind of imposed our will on them a lot. Also hurt them from the outside some.

Another game with strong signs of improvement in the half court offense, even with Dion and Brandon out for extended periods. Another game where our press was not very successful. Bucknell did a really nice job breaking it and getting easy shots on the other end.

Not our best effort on defense, but we rebounded the ball relatively well, as we should have, executed well on offense and won easily. We are playing at a high level, consistently playing hard and being aggressive. There is a lot to like about this team, and I think it continues to improve as the season progresses. If RC can continue to play like every game is Christmas Time, we are going to be even harder to beat. Tulane next...our chance to thank them for taking Roy Danforth and allowing our program to reach the next level. Thanks Blue Wave, 2 days in advance.

Great job! Especially liked the comment about the green recliner...LOL:rolling:

I do not think SU played really well this evening. Actually fortunate that Bucknell missed many open shots in the first half or this could have been too close for comfort. I do like the fact that on what I percieve as an off night SU can still win by nearly 20 points. Such a deep team, it could be quite a ride this year.

Tom, you are always so wonderful (as you were tonight), I hate to quibble.

However, I beleive Tulane is the GREEN Wave.

Great game for Rak and MCW... Michael has looked better in past games, but just getting out and getting run for the majority of a half is what is really important.

Question for the elder members of the board... do you remember us ever having a quieter star than Kris? Wes had a quiet game too, but his raw athleticism, length, explosion, lottery-pick potential, and the fact that he did not have a Dion-type of running mate to draw attention away from him, all made it quite difficult to stay under the radar. Can't really think of someone who was better than KJO, but at the same time didn't need to dominate the ball to do it.

I stand corrected. Really should have remembered that as I attended the football game against Tulane in the Superdome just a couple of months ago.

I think it is pretty unusual to play an out of conference school that far away in football and basketball in the same season. I know we played Colgate in both not too long ago. I wonder who the last OOC team we played in both sports before that? Maybe a MAC team?

"do you remember us ever having a quieter star than Kris?"

i can remember many a night looking at the boxscore and thinking "moten scored 18?"

Moten is the first one that came to my mind, as well. Not flashy. Just consistent.

Moten was a deft and quiet scorer but he had the ball A LOT, which I believe is the point that Fish was making. KJO doesn't need the ball a lot in order to get his points.

The other guy that comes to mind for me is Damone Brown.

My thoughts about the defense is that in the first half they played their normal trapping style and Bucknell was able to work the ball and get apparent wide open shots but as was pointed out that they (B) also appeared to be slightyl off with their timing, missing their shots. Maybe they were nervous about the SU close outs. In the 2nd half Buknell's timing was better maybe because they were about a step deeper. Then when SU adjusted to stay closer to the shooters, SU couldn't trap as easily or didn't want to to leave anybody open. No trapping reduces chances for steals.

Kris has a lot of fun out there as well. I enjoy this teams laid back approach before games. I think "game face" type stuff is so overrated. You can't ask people or groups of people to be something they aren't. Mookie in his own way is a leader on this team as well. Now when we lose a game, people will post that we don't have enough intensity, that Kris isn't a leader, etc etc, which to me is all nonsense

Thanks for your always entertaining recap.

My couple of thoughts watching from my living room:

- I was really happy that when ESPN flashed the obligatory full screen graphic about the Fine Mess that Tim Welsh basically ignored it and transitioned the conversation in a different direction, or so I thought he did.

- Saw Dirty on at least one occasion attempt to take his man off the dribble to the hoop. Yeah, if he could gain the confidence in his handle to do this just here and there it would be a great addition to his game.

- Seemed like we couldn't finish anything on the break last night. I can't recall a game where we had so many fast break attempts result in zero points.

- Dion's catch and shoot off of a screen in the first half was really impressive, reminded me of Andy. If he is able to do that consistently... Holy Shet watch out, we have found our star, he won't be here next year and we can stop worrying about whether we have a guy that carry us offensively.

- Was really stoked to see Rak get the run he did. I was really happy for him that he had his turn at a pretty solid performance. Made me realize how deep we are; as I was watching and wondering why JB wasn't rewarding him for his solid play with reentry later in the 1st half I started thinking hmmmm, Dirty hasn't had much run yet and Fair had only had a few minutes......if Rak all of a sudden started playing out of his mind, how would the rotation work to get all of those guys minutes? Maybe that's why Rak really doesn't get an opportunity to play through his mistakes...the rotation just becomes impossible with three guys at the PF alongside a 32+ minute guy at the other forward.

- I thought the rotation was really strange last night, but in a good way. Very rare to see JB give two deep bench guys so much run in a game that was within 10-12 points late into the second half. MCW played most of the second half and Rak played a considerable number of minutes in the second half as well. Maybe Triche and Dion were banged up or maybe JB was just feeling chartiable as we close in on the holiday season and wanted to boost MCW and Rak's spirits.

- I see a lot of comments about how badly we played. I really didn't see that. I thought we played pretty well, especially given that the majority of the game was played with combinations heretofore not seen in these parts.

My guess is that JB decided before the game to give MCW a lot of minutes to get him ready if needed. Despite a number of mistakes that would get virtually anyone pulled out in an instant, he left him in, which would back up my hunch. I had hoped that Rak would get minutes tonight. I don't know if JB planned it, but Rak got them because he earned them. I hope he gets some confidence from last night.

Couldn't agree more. The game isn't about woofing or making faces; it's about making plays and winning. Glad our guys have been able to do that and appear to be having a fun time doing so.

Here is to hoping Kris keeps playing with the black shoes rather than the blue

Shumpert

You were aware he'd hit a few threes but he also got a ton of garbage baskets that you forgot about.

The other guy that comes to mind for me is Damone Brown.

Damone Brown was a post scorer, at least his senior year. We dumped the ball into him a lot. Shumpert also was an option we forced. It seems like both were much less useful when they were primary options, than when they were complimentary players. Same went for Joseph last year... He is a very good secondary offensive player, but when he was asked (or thought he was being asked) to carry the whole offense, his efficiency dropped badly.

yeah, Moten and Shump were both guys I thought of, but then nixed them because they were clearly the best scorers on the team and as fans we waited each possession for them to get the ball. Same with Wes. Even though KJO takes his fair share of shots, I don't get that same feeling while watching us play. I am more like "take it to the hole Dion or Brandon," or "feed Melo in the block," and then all of a sudden the ball ends up in Kris's hands for a wide open three or relatively open lane to drive... that part is just my own opinion I guess, so I definitely wouldn't say Wes, Shump, and Moten DON'T fit that same bill.... just in a slightly different manner, IMO.

well joseph does in fact lead this squad in shot attempts by a hefty margin. and he has much more talent around him.one more note on shump and lo-mo. altho we think of shump as a stroker he also was incredibly long in the zone and jumped a ton of passes on the wing. and lawrence was a db in high school (roomed with marvin graves) and also an excellent defender as well as a baseline killa.both players averaged about 2 steals a game.
unfortunatley they'll probably be best remembered for the goggles and the TO.
