It was an awful day for tailgating. It was cold, it was windy, and poured the entire time. Consigliere said he and others) arrived at 1:30 pm to set up. They did a great job under awful circumstances. Props to all involved. Had a great time talking to people, though it was a little cramped huddling under the tents, near the propane heaters.
I have been trying to get my wife to attend a Tara game four years. What day did she finally choose to attend one? Yesterday of course! She said she really enjoyed the tailgate and all the people snap and says she won’t be coming back. Mission accomplished.
My wife is not a football fan. She doesn’t like it, doesn’t understand the rules, hates the long delays, etc. In order to convince her to attend a game, i promised that we could leave at half time, and watch the second half at home. It was a necessary compromise in my quest to get her on board with this crazy college football thing we all do.
I will talk about the game later, but here’s what happened: she went to the game. She enjoyed it. At halftime we went to leave, but she asked to stop to get something to eat and drink first. While waiting in line, she had second thoughts and offered to stay for the rest of the game. So we did. I know she did it to make me happy and I don’t want to force her to do something she hates but maybe we added another fan to the fold last night. Fingers crossed.
9 tubas. The band is sounding better to me each week. Their marching routines are more ambitious and they have been asked to learn a lot more than in the past. I really love that thry are now learning and playing the fight song for the opponent each home game. NC State didn’t have anyone capable of writing a fight song so they just use Army’s. It was a little confusing when I heard it, but the SUMB got it right. Anyway, I wanted to give that group some recognition. They are doing great things.
Loved being able to watch live games played elsewhere before the game on the big scorecard. Sweet. Love the 50% off concessions before the game. Sweet. Love the added emphasis on out of town scores, though if you are going to show scores of 8 games simultaneously, you have to give fans time to read and process them all. I am a speed reader type and I couldn’t do it. I would give at least 2 seconds for every score displayed.
Great game played by Eric Dungey. He took a couple sacks maybe he shouldn’t have but he also completed a number of passes only by waiting until the last second, just before getting leveled, to get a throw off. He has great poise under pressure and isn’t affected by big hits. In the end, that might be the difference between Eric and Ryan Finley, and why one team won and one lost. Very happy for him. He deserves this.
NC State started a backup at CB, a true frosh. We went after him unmericifully and he just got destroyed. Either got beat or committed a PI just about every time the ball came his way.
Thought NC State was in general bigger and stronger with their WRs, LBs and secondary but we were faster. Riley and Johnson were open all game long and the Wolfpack had no one capable of covering them. Harmon is a beast out there and he kept them in the game almost singlehandedly. What a shame he chose them over Syracuse. Big mistake. Pratt was the best defensive player on the field. Both should be locks for first team All ACC.
Thought NC State did a good job attacking our defense. Lots of dink routes to the flat we were willing to give them. They didn’t have the OL or RBs to run on us but we played 8 men in the box to take that away and they fooled our safeties and beat our CBs long too many times. Also mixed in some trick plays that worked well. We again didn’t get many sacks, as the slow footed Finley was still able to evade our DEs a number of times when they had good chances. We blitzed with some success early, then got burned a few times and played more straight up. Looked like the backup OT who was blocking Robinson got tired down the stretch, which was a huge key to the game.
In the end, their offense did well but as Doeren said, they had to score every possession to have a chance to win, and while they had a chance on their last drive, a couple great plays by senior Cordy, who hasn’t had a great season, and a big play by Robinson were enough to ice things. Happy for Giant; like Dungey, he has gone through a world of adversity, and he deserves some good things to fall his way.
Random thoughts:
Szymt had another huge game. He better by first team All ACC.
Iffy had a tough matchup with Harmon, who is terrific. Thought he did good considering everything. Hope he is okay.
Hof is a huge weapon. His kickoffs and punts are consistently top notch.
Great to see Shy playing a lot and doing well. He was a big reason NC State couldn’t run the ball. Let him blitz please.
Guthrie is quietly having an excellent season.
Was really surprised to hear Doeren complain about PI calls. From my seat, I saw his team got a lot of good calls. Don’t know why, but I greatly dislike him.
Have we ever had a team with do many freshmen making big contributions every week?
The crowd was great. Props to everyone who attended.
I had 2 goals for this season: get to a bowl game and get back in the top 25, even for just one week.
Looking good Billy Ray!
War Damn Otto!
