My Take

i believe clearly that shrader should be the starter. he has a much better presence, a greater amount of poise, nothing gets him to excited good or bad. he has a better focus and makes thinks happen. he obviously cannot throw the long ball.. maybe they can work on that. i also believe that td would be better coming off the bench.
i believe against better opponents shrader would be the my first choice . he is steady does not panic, he can run and throw on the run.
i was disappointed in ol --albany got pressure on qbs alot . not to many sacks but consistant disruptive pressure.
Poise. That has been the word I have been looking for. A little more poise, confidence and chemistry with Shrader. The players seem to respond to him better. But seriously I could flip a coin at this point between the 2.

Execution was good yesterday… Always stuff to clean up, but it’s nice to have games like that.

Yo-yo of confidence thus far this season. We come off with a good performance against Liberty and the team can gain some .

Is there a better ACC opener than FSU right now? Methinks not. That thing can snowball down there if Norvell doesn’t get it moving quick this year.

Hey, keep working and take one game at a time.

Sean Tucker is awesome. His 8 yard TD in the first yesterday was one of his best runs. I know most people will look to the chunk plays or the long TD’s but he saw the crease and attacked it downhill on that run. Hes a Sunday back.
Haha that program is in rough shape and been in a free fall since Jimbo left. Taggart and Norville have been train wrecks. My neighbor and his wife are both alumns. They headed to Winston Salem for the WF game on Saturday and had the brown bags to wear over their heads. They could care less about a good basketball program. Football is all that matters to most at FSU.

Right on...It is not that Tommy cannot throw a pretty ball or that he doesn't have a great arm. It is his lack of Pocket Awareness and we have seen it for multiple years. He's not going to magically get better Pocket Awareness or magically start to go through his progressions.

He’s had better pocket awareness this season, it’s just some are loathe to admit it.

He has, since he's not getting sacked on almost every pass play. He's also doing a better job of running the ball on designed plays and chucking it away (more often) when it's time. On scrambles, he's been able to hit receivers that improvise to get open. Obviously he knows the offense better than Shrader, his arm accuracy is superior and he's the only QB able to reach all parts of the field. Most of the TD-WR issues have been the receiver cutting off a route, failing to recognize a blitz or zone coverage, or dropping the ball. So yes, TD has had problems dealing with pressure and hasn't lead us to the promised land (wins). But many of the reasons behind our record are outside of his control - play calling, O-line problems, WR drops/breakdowns, turnovers, penalties and poor field position.

So on balance, it seems to me that TD has now separated himself as the starter. But unlike some others I don't think about this in a binary way, as though the starter should be anointed forever, or that one is great and the other trash. Both QB's bring qualities to the table. If TD starts, Shrader can back him up if he's nicked up or not playing well - just like TD did for Dungey. Meanwhile, Shrader can learn the offense and work on his deficiencies.

Down the road, even if he isn't the best option right now, I think Shrader has starter talent. I'm not going to crucify him for errant throws since, before this year, the guy hadn't thrown a live pass in 20 months. He's obviously got the moxxie ("poise"), the vision and the legs to be a leader; he's just needs work on his mechanics. Shrader is excellent in finding receivers in unsettled situations. But on designed shots - 20+ yard passes - releasing off his back foot has limited his effectiveness. No doubt the staff sees this ... and will work with him. Accuracy will improve with better mechanics and game reps, which he'll get when Tommy gets nicked up or falters. So the fact that Shrader might not be the best option at the moment doesn't mean he can't help us. Heck, the very fact that there's even a QB controversy is an improvement.

We still don't have that much of a pocket. It's better but not great.

One thing I noticed a couple of times in the Albany game, instead of taking off to the right, he's spinning back around to the left. Good from the standpoint of trying to keep the play alive, but it also puts him a tough spot to make a good throw without stopping to plant his feet. And if a defense starts anticipating that, it's going to cost a few more yards.

He's probably going to have to just take off and run more. Which means we should have at least 3 QBs ready to play.

Wonder if more Davis will make a difference in terms of the pocket holding up.

I hope so, helps us get our 5 best OL on the field. Wonder how long it will take him to be in condition to start and play the majority of the snaps.

On that front, I was happy to see both McKinley Williams and Davis at least see the field last weekend. Hope they can continue to get healthy. Not that Williams is the full answer at NT, because we have to do better against the run, but having improved depth can't hurt.

And agree -- I think we haven't gotten our "best 5" OL out there yet. Which is a cause for optimism, because the OL hasn't been perfect by any means, but they look better than last year. So maybe they haven't peaked.

RT is an issue now that Servais is at Center. If #96 didn't look like the second coming of LT I'd be more worried. I think with Dakota back the mix things will be better or should be.

OL upticks just a little, can make a huge difference with Barry Sanders Sean Tucker back there.
