Well, that was a long day. Played 18 at Green Lakes and then went immediately to the Fine Mess tailgate. Someone rear ended my car in the way there. Minor damage, no one was hurt. But I spent half my time at the tailgate filing a claim.

Anyway, the tailgate was very good. I think we had around 130 people attend. Good menu. Hot dogs, hamburgers, somewhat Philly style steak sandwiches and sausage with peppers and onions. Those there the mostly protein options.

They also had a thing of what looked like tortellini, salt potatoes, two kinds of lasagna and a couple other heavy carb options I tried to avoid looking at so I would not be tempted to partake. I think at least one was a casserole.

And ‘Louisiana’ Mark made some of his famous jambalaya. I ate some of this because if you gotta eat carbs, you need to be sure they are really delicious carbs.

There were lots of beer options provided by Justin. Lots of water and soda choices too including Diet Pepsi and yes, Diet Coke. Good to see everyone and talk to a bunch of you.

Headed up to the dome a little after six. It was a perfect fall day. The sky was a brilliant blue and there were just enough white clubs floating around to provide a nice contrast. The smell of fall was in the air and all was well with the world.

On the way I noticed that ESF owned parking lot is being used much more this year. Good for them. Guessing the lack of spots available in the West lots contributed to this.

Glad to see SUMB had 12 sousaphones performing yesterday. The SUMB sousas have their own Instagram account and from that I knew there were 12 of them but only 10 got out for UConn.

SUMB was in solid form and as mentioned, the male and female members chose. To help lead the singing of the NA and alma mater have skills. They did their tribute to the Beatles show from last eeek again. Lady Madonna, Eleanor Rigby and Hey Jude were featured.

Colgate brought a good crowd. They filled most of lower visitor section and a good part of the section above it. God bless those people for showing up.

The students were late arriving again but ended up with a pretty good turnout by the end of the first quarter. They did the white out thing they are obsessed with again. Pretty much all by themselves. Poor communication or I think more might have bought in. I want to again campaign for an orange out on Halloween. Hope the students embrace this and accept the official color of this school is orange.

The turnout otherwise was okay but not great. I thought there were about 32k in the stands. I believe SU reported 37K.

Before the game, I was struck by the huge difference in the size of the players on each team. SU has been bigger than Colgate for many decades but I am not sure it has ever been to this degree. Not sure if Colgate has gotten smaller but we all know SU is a lot bigger than it has been in the past.

Let’s talk about the game.

SU dominated from the start.

I think Colgate realized they had no chance to stop our running game unless they loaded the box and relied on man coverage on the SU WRs. That did not work. Little that they tried worked on defense all game. Gill is probably 3 tenths of a second faster than any of the Colgate DBs and he is taller and jumps way higher. There were similar mismatches all over and Colgate was just not able to stop Syracuse. I believe Stonehouse was only asked to punt once (and he bombed it into the end zone).

Spoon got hurt early. I don’t think he returned. Pringle replaced him and it appeared he did a very capable job there. Of course, Mack is still out at LT so Betrand got the start. Miller filled in some. They looked okay to me.

Washington came in early and got a lot of PT at OG. Looked good too. I think Shevchenko played a lot in the second half at OT. SU played a ton of players. It was pretty cool to see guys like Darien and Dante get their first receptions and Hill was really impressive in the Carrie’s he had at RB. I think Carney only came in for one play but he made it count, running for a TD. There will be more in the future from these guys.

We played a ton of guys on defense and it wasn’t just at garbage time. Jaime Tremble played a lot at LB and looked impressive. Got a sack. He will get more of them.

Long played a lot and made a number of good plays. Wilson was active and had one of his best games. Lots of good play but I thought Samuel, playing man on an island most of the game, was our best player in defense. He made sticks in running plays, broke up passes and even got a pick. Which I think he should have gotten a TD on the return. Why did the refs blow the play dead? Throw the flag on the chop block on the frustrated Colgate player but don’t take away the chance to take it back all the way. Sigh. Thought the refs did a pretty good job otherwise….

Thought Angeli looked very good. Threw the ball very accurately. Made good decisions. Saw the field. He was 24-32 and I remember at least 4 good passes that were dropped.

Thought Rickie Collins looked solid when he was out there. Yes, it was a terrible decision to throw that pass to the Colgate defender. Not sure what he was thinking there. He does have a strong arm and sometimes these guys think they can throw the ball placed or should never be thrown. This might have been one of those times. But he ran it well and made solid decisions and throws otherwise. Glad he got a chance to play and hope he will learn from his experiences.

I think Fitzgerald is going to be very good at Colgate. Props to him and his team for trying hard in the second half, when they were able the leverage their talented 6’6 WR Swanson for some nice catches. That backup QB can throw and needs to be the starter soon. Hopefully Colgate can keep him there long enough to get good at the FCS level sometime soon.

Clemson is a huge jump up. Hopefully Cook, Grant, Willis and Mack will be able to play close to 100% for the game. I suspect not all will but a man can hope!

What else? The guy that is the game host for the Syracuse Mets and SU football ended up doing the football game. It has to pay more. He continued to do a good job. It
Helps having the microphone and sound system set up properly so he can be understood.

Good game. Gotta get better for next week.

As usual, I really appreciate your complete synopses, but no National Anthem? Syracuse should be ashamed.😤🙄

Samuel was out of bounds.

The announcers said several times that Fran tried to hire the Colgate coach last year. I'd never heard that before. He and Fran really mucked it up after the game so maybe something to watch this off season.

Sorry but where did you read or hear that there was no National Anthem? Tomcat even said in his post “SUMB was in solid form and as mentioned, the male and female members chose. To help lead the singing of the NA and alma mater have skills.”.

Glad Collins got a 2nd chance to get back in there to redeem himself. Too bad he lost his helmet on that one play, but it gave Carney an opportunity to shine. Good for all of them.

Doug Sherman did the play by play on TV. I know he is an upstate NY alum, but he really does his homework. Know a lot about both programs inside and out. Watching or listening to him shows the gap on how bad Matt Park is, especially for football. And, I like Matt for everything he does. Just not PBP.

Yeah, his toe on the second foot hit the line in the back corner, otherwise he has a 109 yard pick six.

I have a few more takes.

We showed more pressure from the defensive line and press covered for the first time all year, and still could not pressure the quarterback the way we need to. I would not expect to see much of this style defense going forward. Not that it wasn’t somewhat effective, I just don’t believe Erob will.

O line Played ok but too many guys with high pad level and too many guys finishing up running plays standing up rather than finishing their blocks. Not enough nasty.

One thing that seems to be growing more evident is Fran has an obsession with size where “big people beat up little people”, but we don’t have enough explosion, athleticism, and nastiness on either line. Just huge size. To me Kevin Darton had showed as much or more than any lineman with perhaps the exception of Jobity in the last five years. But in theory, he was too small.

We tried to cover their all American receiver MTM and could not do it, but I don’t think we really tried to “take him away”. Just gave our corners a chance to cover in space and see what they could do. With that coverage, if we gave their quarterback time, which we did, he found him every time. But again, I don’t think taking him away was a priority.

They made a lot of big plays, but if you look at them, they were not great throws, but they were insanely good catches. Their tight end made two insane TDs and #9 another huge catch. Coverage was actually very good on most of their big plays. There really was not a difference between their quarterback and receivers and UConns.

#14 Davion Kerr set a new Syracuse record for the worst angle ever taken on a running play. (And we have a lot of contenders.) he had 10 yards to close on the RB and miscalculated so badly it was almost like he was a grade school player. Easy 40 yard TD was embarrassing, even if he’s a third stranger. It was really the only “really bad” defensive play I saw.

Our second and third team players got beat badly. Especially in the secondary. We are missing Grant badly.

Individually, our receiving core is every bit as good as last year. Unbelievable depth.

Hill has a little Ant Bailey in him. Seems to run differently than our other backs. I expect him to be our #2 or 3 back next year.

Re Gill, on-air announcer said that the defender got “Mossed” at least ten times it seemed. He must have thought it exceedingly clever lol.
