Smallish crowd tonight. I would guess about 17 K all told. The student turnout was also much smaller than for the Cornell game.

A gray-haired gentleman sang the national anthem. He wore a Pat Tillman jersey in honor of Pat and Veterans Day. Did a good job.

This game was kind of similar to the Cornell game. We had one good half and one poor half. Unlike the Cornell game, this time we played well on the first half, and poorly in the second.

To me, the most important development of the game was the stellar play of Tyler Ennis. He did not play well against Cornell, and I think he needed a good game tonight to restore his confidence. Tyler came through in flying colors. He distributed the ball well, consistently made good decisions, and also finished well. Good to see.

This is the first game I thought the new rules really made a difference in the way the game developed. There were a startling number of fouls called on both sides, as well as a inordinate number of free throws taken.

The refs did not allow hand checking of any kind. And it was rare for play to go more than 20 or 30 seconds without a foul being called.

TC got into foul trouble early, and ended up playing limited minutes because of this. It was far worse for Fordham however as the foul trouble their big guys got into created devastating problems for them given their limited depth.

Fordham got a great performance by a kid named Fraser, who scored seemingly at will. Shot the ball well from the outside, and took advantage of the tight foul calling to get the ball inside and either score or draw a foul. He is a good one.

Thought the Syracuse zone in the first half was excellent, our best defense of the season. Was also very happy with the excellent rebounding that half. Jeremy Grant and Coleman in particular did a great job here.

CJ Fair is shooting the ball far more than he has in the past. Might be missing a few shots he would ordinarily make, but he is piling up the points, and is showing every sign of being a very effective go to guy this season.

JG had a fine game. Is rebounding the ball better than he ever has, being very aggressive in the paint, and playing excellent defense.

DC II also played well. Piled up with a lot of rebounds in limited minutes. Drew a lot of fouls too, as usual. Thus far this season, his defense has shown considerable improvement.

The second half was a semi nightmare. Syracuse played very bad defense, left Fordham open for open jumpers and allowed them in the paint to score easy baskets or draw fouls on many occasions.

And we did not play well on offense either. Took a lot of quick jumpers, were not patient, did not work the ball inside much, and if not for good offensive rebounding, might've gotten in serious trouble.

To be fair, JV played a lot of young guys, and they played like freshman tend to play. Fordham crippled by foul trouble, switched from their normal man defense to zone. This actually helped them as SU did a poor job attacking it and kept settling for jumpers when the middle was open and the Rams had horrible foul trouble.

I do want to credit Tyler Roberson for being very aggressive in the paint,. He was much more assertive today, did not settle for quick jumpers, drew a number of fouls and showed me a lot.

When JB playathe freshman a lot, this is a very young team, and young teams tend to play inconsistently. The wild up-and-downs we are seeing out to be expected, and I suspect things will settle down once the rotation tightens a little against tough teams.

Judgment Day is coming soon.

Coleman's rebounding was great, did ok on offense but him getting stuffed and him putting on the floor is getting beyond old.

"There were a startling number of fouls called.."

It was like being slapped over and over again with a wet mackerel! Or a cod, or halibut! Slap slap slap slap! My head was reeling, my cheeks were red and chapped, I had fish slime in my hair, and the hits just kept coming! I need to take a pill of some kind.

Still think the hand check realities will help Cuse versus clutch and grab teams like Ville, tOSU, GTown, and Pitt
The new rules will separate the traditional powers fromn the rest of the herd. Only the big boys with deep rosters will survive. It will kill the mid-majors and teams trying to move up without having a big-time bench.

I thought Tyler Ennis Shadwell as well, as well...

I don't know what you said Tom, but that had to be one of the most frustrating games I've ever seen even tho we had control the whole time. As you saw, I left at the 8 minute timeout in the 2nd half. Too many fouls both ways. Took a lot away from the game and made it slow and painful.

Tom... Please tell me that you were using that weird app again. "July the files as usual" ---- was beyond my translation ability!

"As she did not play well on offense either."

Tom, spill it. Who was that offensively challenged female you saw? ;) I'm obviously missing some interesting things on that court.

Some comments:

The voice recognition software is good in a lot of ways, but as the good folks hear have pointed out, it has some drawbacks too. When you type something incorrectly, you usually get jumbled packs of letters that the spell check helpfully points out need to be addressed. When your text comes from this software, you are going to get actual words. If the software isn't sure what you said, it will give it's best shot and you get what you get. Maybe the problem is my Great Lakes accent. Regionally preferential software. Probably written by someone from Boston or LA.

I tried to review what I typed and correct the problems. The word foul for instance, came out as file seemingly every time I said it. Since there were so many called, this was not cool at all. Anyway, I see now I have to really review what the VR software comes up with. I could end up making a proposal or challenging Mike Tyson to a fight if I am not careful.

For the Cornell game, I had no time to review the My Take. Went to sleep immediately after posting it, drove to Maryland as soon as I woke up and didn't get around to even looking at the reaction to it until Sunday evening. At least this time I tried to clean it up this morning.

The later start does not help things. I think we have a couple of 9 PM games on the schedule this season. If I elect to make my post on those games on gamenight, you might see some really interesting things.

Anyway, some other random things...

1) Cto was featured on the Say Cheese Cam during the Cornell game. They know who the real celebrities are.

2) My favorite student chant of the year so far was "Harvard rejects!". It was repeated for several minutes by the SU students late in the Cornell game, when the game was clearly over. Might have been in response to the Cornell cheerleader who brought a Safety School sign to the SU-Cornell game last year.

3) I have been critical of Dome management for the lack of diversity in the food and drinks available. Not sure how long this has been happening, but the stand where the Burger King used to be (it is behind section 121 I think, in the Northeast corner of the Dome, the corner closest to Hendricks Chapel), offers a variety of Saranac beers, as well as chicken tenders, sweet potato fries and onion rings. One of my friends had the chicken tenders and pronounced them very good. 2 of my crew had Saranac Pale Ales and gave them a solid thumbs up. Another person in my section said the sweet potato fries were good. And my nose tells me that the onion rings might be very good as well.

The fouls in the second half made it excruciating. I can't imagine this level of foul calling continues in January. It ruins the flow of game.

From what I can see, if Ennis gets in fouls trouble, we're going to be challenged to run the point.

I think that, unless teams adapt very quickly or refs change the way they call games, depth is going to be a necessity this year.

Over the last 15 years, it appears that refs have called, on average, about 35-37 fouls a game. They called 46 fouls in the MSU-Kentucky game; 53 in the Kansas-Duke game and 55 in ours. Both SU and Fordham were in the double bonus by the 11:20 mark of the second half.

I'm not sure that JB is going to be able to tighten up the rotation the way he likes to.

Having multiple options at multiple positions is going to be important this year in order to contend with the inevitable foul trouble that will result if the refs continue to call games the way they have been early in this season.

The food in the Saranac concession area is good I had it during WF football game. I just wish SU would work out a deal with Dinosaur or other local places for a stand or two. Just because the Dome is 30+ years doesn't mean they can't at least offer some new food items.
