Smallish crowd tonight. I would guess about 17 K all told. The student turnout was also much smaller than for the Cornell game.
A gray-haired gentleman sang the national anthem. He wore a Pat Tillman jersey in honor of Pat and Veterans Day. Did a good job.
This game was kind of similar to the Cornell game. We had one good half and one poor half. Unlike the Cornell game, this time we played well on the first half, and poorly in the second.
To me, the most important development of the game was the stellar play of Tyler Ennis. He did not play well against Cornell, and I think he needed a good game tonight to restore his confidence. Tyler came through in flying colors. He distributed the ball well, consistently made good decisions, and also finished well. Good to see.
This is the first game I thought the new rules really made a difference in the way the game developed. There were a startling number of fouls called on both sides, as well as a inordinate number of free throws taken.
The refs did not allow hand checking of any kind. And it was rare for play to go more than 20 or 30 seconds without a foul being called.
TC got into foul trouble early, and ended up playing limited minutes because of this. It was far worse for Fordham however as the foul trouble their big guys got into created devastating problems for them given their limited depth.
Fordham got a great performance by a kid named Fraser, who scored seemingly at will. Shot the ball well from the outside, and took advantage of the tight foul calling to get the ball inside and either score or draw a foul. He is a good one.
Thought the Syracuse zone in the first half was excellent, our best defense of the season. Was also very happy with the excellent rebounding that half. Jeremy Grant and Coleman in particular did a great job here.
CJ Fair is shooting the ball far more than he has in the past. Might be missing a few shots he would ordinarily make, but he is piling up the points, and is showing every sign of being a very effective go to guy this season.
JG had a fine game. Is rebounding the ball better than he ever has, being very aggressive in the paint, and playing excellent defense.
DC II also played well. Piled up with a lot of rebounds in limited minutes. Drew a lot of fouls too, as usual. Thus far this season, his defense has shown considerable improvement.
The second half was a semi nightmare. Syracuse played very bad defense, left Fordham open for open jumpers and allowed them in the paint to score easy baskets or draw fouls on many occasions.
And we did not play well on offense either. Took a lot of quick jumpers, were not patient, did not work the ball inside much, and if not for good offensive rebounding, might've gotten in serious trouble.
To be fair, JV played a lot of young guys, and they played like freshman tend to play. Fordham crippled by foul trouble, switched from their normal man defense to zone. This actually helped them as SU did a poor job attacking it and kept settling for jumpers when the middle was open and the Rams had horrible foul trouble.
I do want to credit Tyler Roberson for being very aggressive in the paint,. He was much more assertive today, did not settle for quick jumpers, drew a number of fouls and showed me a lot.
When JB playathe freshman a lot, this is a very young team, and young teams tend to play inconsistently. The wild up-and-downs we are seeing out to be expected, and I suspect things will settle down once the rotation tightens a little against tough teams.
Judgment Day is coming soon.
