NC State Postgame

At least he got us 17 points, which is more than 3 of the other starters combined, or the entire bench combined.

We would have lost by more, and been behind by 20 a lot sooner without JJ at least trying to score.

So, do you disagree?
Nobody else made more than TWO SHOTS in the whole game.
What do you want?
At least somebody was trying to win.

I don't agree or disagree - it's impossible to know what would have happened if he had decided to pass to his teammates instead of taking 19 shots. But to imply that his sheer number of points is indicative of his will to win or that lack of points from other starters is evidence of their inability to score (aside from George last night - he had no business having the ball) if they had the ball is negligent in my opinion.

My gut tells me that if there were a couple fewer shot attempts and a couple more assists from JJ, that the score would have been closer. But that assumes his teammates make the shots and that the shot attempts removed from him were misses. As you can see, there's no way to tell.

Relax. He’s a decent player, just a bad fit in Red’s “system” (or lack there of). No need to trash the kid.
I don’t see anything close to a decent player. He’s really bad at the team part of what is supposed to be a team sport.

i myself have no problem with a bench player fouling out. they give you 5. use them.
anything but a cheap and 1 . just make sure it's hard enuf to wipe out the shot .
I agree. And what was he saving Sadiq for with 4 fouls? The stretch run? Play him out, he's not a huge loss.

One note for this thread is that I’m really bummed how this season is playing out bc I think this roster has guys that are easy to root for.

I think Donnie is immensely talented. I love William Kyle. I like the guys on the team.

Even if JJ drives me nuts, I think he’s a good dude.

I can go on, but you get the point.

It’s really too bad. Seems like a good crew of guys. Lot of potential. Lot of individual talent that just isn’t harnessed correctly.
That's how I feel. There are pieces and guys that are easy to root for. And who doesn't want to root for the local kid that was a MAA? During the Vegas tournament and the Tennessee win, I looked forward to this season's potential, especially once Donnie came back. Now it's a big bucket of apathy.

Last year in ACC play he averaged 13.4/6.5/5 with 3 tot on 41/35/78. This year he’s averaging 8.6/6/3 with 4 TPG on 31/30/81. He’s been significantly worse here than he was at Georgia Tech for whatever reason. We seem to make players worse.

It’s amazing the one stat that has improved is the free throw percentage, the one stat not reliant on ball movement. If he does leave whether due to him not fitting the next coach new system or wanting to get away from the Syracuse fan base, I am very confident he will be successful at Syracuse with a new coach or elsewhere.

This offense is good for getting JJ and Kiyan shots. Freeman would exceed in any offense. It helps no one else.

It all comes down to a lack of variance in our offense. We are easily scouted before games and even moreso at halftime. What we do have is not ran well anyway...

I'm not sure teams even guard us from 3 anymore. Until Betsey or Freeman gets hot who can actually make a jumpshot.

Basically we are the team that makes other team's defenses look good. Now that our defense has become swiss cheese the games aren't close anymore.

Well we only had 10 assists total. Not a lot of sharing going on.
And William Kyle mentioned that very thing about sharing. He must be so frustrated. I wondered if that last dunk attempt was him just saying, screw it, I’m going to take it like everyone else does and if I pass, I’m not getting it back. I did like the aggression on that attempt though

Brad Brownell said it after the Clemson game. Our program is living in the past, and it has been for a decade. I saw a recruiting report when JB was still coach and a high school coach said our assistants thought the Syracuse name had a lot more cache than it really does anymore. That arrogance has disserved us greatly.

And what was Autry’s response to Brownell? Something stupid like you can’t take away our past. Actually, you can. They’ve killed the golden goose and it’s going to take some work to get it back.
I must have missed this. What happened? Was something said in press conferences or something? Surprised Brownell would say something like that.

I think every program that's been great over estimates the value of history with regards to current success. We've seen it with UCLA and Indiana in basketball. Look at Alabama for a while pre-Saban in football. They were nothing special. When you stop grinding or become incompetent, history becomes relevant only when reminiscing about the good ole days.
