NCAA National Championship: Mon April 7

Hardly…ball was on its way off the rim. It’s not like it was going in. Not to mention Francis looked like an offensive lineman on the Cryer 3 a few possessions before that. Blatant moving screen. It all evened out.

Houston’s energy and conditioning is impressive, but I’ve disliked every team that basically dares the refs to call a foul every time on defense.
I agree with you on the moving screen, but that was definitely goaltending, it doesn't matter where the ball was headed, it matters where the ball is at point of contact. And, it was in the cylinder.

Agreed. Definitely goaltending. My primary point I was trying to make was this was definitely a game where each team had calls go for them and against them. Can’t look at any single play.

Just saw this clip on YouTube. I thought Sharp was going for a 3. Interesting that he was actually supposed to shot fake on the final play and go downhill. If he had done that, he did have a wide open lane to the basket.

I like tough defense, but I wish the officials would call a foul every time a player grabs another player, especially when rebounding. I know they can't see every time, but they let a lot go in the first half and then started calling them in the second half. Just call every foul, eventually teams will stop playing that way. That isn't basketball.
Yeah, it was rough early and then the tight whistles in the second half (early on UF and later on Houston) made it difficult to enjoy. There is a good balance as Raff said by not penalizing athletic players making athletic plays even if there is a little contact.

I can handle some contact, but straight out grabbing should never be overlooked. The rules should protect the athleticism of the game. I think that's what most love about basketball.

Entertaining game I thought, though I do disdain the constant hacking that isn't called. If you need
to foul out teams early in the season to say enough, go ahead and do so, but start calling the
excessing hacking. But the ending, ugh.

Three years ago, maybe two, the play would've been "set up, get a good shot, and everybody crash
the glass". Now it's, "chuck up a rock from deep". No need for it. Houston was shooting 6-25 from
three and didn't even look for shot inside the arc. What was wrong with setting up a post shot,
or a drive, or a midrange J, and get to OT? Thanks analytics geeks for that, you're not improving the
game.

Kev

Duke has to be beside themselves. Better than both those teams.
Last night's game was ugly. Close doesn't mean we'll played. Houston"s execution at the end was dreadful.

I thought the 2nd half was outstanding.

There was an awful lot of over the back to tip out offensive rebounds, too.
They used to call a lot of those fouls.

I am always put off when a player acts shocked that they called his blatant foul. But, now that I think about it, if the dude is doing it all game and they finally call him in the last 10 minutes, I can understand his surprise.

No one can say Golden outcoached Sampson, just like they can't say, Sampson outcoached Scheyer.

Sometimes it's all on the players. They have to execute.
Richards making 3s to stay in the game in the 1st half was execution just like Houston did vs Duke, sure. If a couple of those miss they're different games.

But otherwise, I don't know man. Houston having zero answers for that screen blitz has to be on Sampson a little. Condon getting 3-4 easy dunks on rim rolls (despite playing with no confidence and having a pretty bad F4) is pretty good work by Golden also.

Carlos Boozer? LOL!!! Houston had enough studs to win, and they had a great game plan, they just didn't execute the last three possessions.

Sometimes it's all on the players. They have to execute. Hours and hours of practices and preparation came down to the final 12 seconds. I don't think our Carlos would have had Houston in that position to lead them to that spot.
Meh. Scheyer has the biggest payroll in the sport.

Sampson gets his team to play great defense and play hard, but I don't think he's particulary good coaching offense or running anything special on that end.

They more than made up with it with the first ridiculous technical and touch fouls on Florida at the beginning of the second half when Houston was playing football.
And then made up for that by putting two Houston bigs on Ice

Whether the ball was “on its way off the rim” is immaterial. You can’t touch it if any part of it is still on the rim even if it’s not going to go in.

If it’s off the rim but not completely over the imaginary cylinder you can touch it in NCAA. Mean Gene even confirmed this on replay.

Time to adopt the international rule.

If the ball hits in rim and takes a big bounce above the rim (as in it’s off the rim) but over the cylinder , can you swat it away in FIBA?

Yes once it hits the rim it is fair game for everyone. You can’t swat it away on it’s downward flight or once it hits the backboard.
