NCAA uncovers sports betting-related game manipulation and other violations

Correct. I imagine this is happening much more than people realize.
when you watch games and know what the point spread is, its hard to resist thinking that the players and coaches aren't also keenly aware of what the spread is as well (at least for me, anyway)

What’s nice about legal sports betting is it’s much easier to catch this stuff now. It increases access to gambling, sure, but there is much more transparency and it pushes out illegal bookies.
I’m not so sure it wasn’t better when you only had bookies and point spreads.I mean now that you can bet on just about any play or stat makes it easy for players to control the outcome of a wager.

Player props are how a lot of athletes get caught because it’s easy for the sportsbooks to spot unusual bets.

NY and some other states also don’t allow player prop bets on college games.

so you're sayin' Lawrence Moten had bet the over on time-outs in the second half ?

Would also like to see outlawing of microbets like next player to score. Bets on individual pitches are where the MLB players are getting busted.

I think live bets, like next player to score, are hard to manipulate. It would require somebody having real-time communication with a player and also that the player can score. In basketball, sure, the player could make sure he’s putting up the next shot, but there’s no guarantee he can score. In football, it would be impossible.

Baseball has a slower pace and the bets that got that one pitcher investigated were bets on the first pitch of an inning. Sitting there for half an inning creates a lot more opportunity to communicate with players vs. trying it during a timeout or something in other sports.

Impossible you say? I’ll take that action.

Player props should be banned across the country, of course too much cash being made for that to happen.

Football players don’t call their own plays. A QB on the goal line could maybe audible to a QB sneak but, for that to work for live bet manipulation, the QB would need to communicate in real time with the person placing the bet somehow AND call his own number AND be 100% sure the defense won’t stop him. For an RB or WR or TE to pull it off, they’d need all of that and for the QB to be in on it with them. If not impossible, virtually impossible.

Bet manipulation is more of a concern with negative outcomes. A bet that’s more likely to be manipulated would be something like, ‘next play is a turnover.’ In football, that still requires an uninvolved party or two or three (the defense and even your teammates) to do or not do something. You could be the QB and decide you’re going to fumble, but you need the defense to recover it and your teammates not to. Same with a pick.

In basketball, you could just dribble it off your foot out of bounds. That’s much more likely but brings us back to the problem of sticking out like a sore thumb. Those types of live bets are typically like $5, maybe $20 for a billionaire (I’m being hyperbolic, obvs). If an account starts tossing hundreds or thousands on bets like that and winning a lot, the sportsbooks will catch on immediately. “A lot” would be winning like 3 out of every 10.
