I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.

I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 13 of our 32 misses = 40.6%
They rebounded 10 of their 39 misses = 25.6%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 8 points on 13 O-Rebs = 0.615 points/O-reb
They got 10 points on 10 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/ O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 15 turnovers – 7 steals = 8 unforced
They had 12 turnovers – 6 steals = 6 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 17 points from 12 takeaways =1.417 points/takeaway
They had 12 points from 15 takeaways = 0.800 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 25 points in 25 unsettled situations = 1.000 points
They had 22 points in 25 unsettled situations = 0.880 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 42 + 12 = 54
They had 29 + 15 = 44

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 20 for 36 on twos, (55.6%), 6 for 18 on threes (33.3%) and 13 for 22 on frees (59.1%)
They were 12 for 28 on twos, (42.9%), 10 for 32 on threes (31.3%) and 8 for 10 on frees (80.0%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 30 PIP, 28 POP, 18 TREY, 10 TZ, 6 FBP, 17 POTO
They had 24 PIP, 30 POP, 30 TREY, 0 TZ, 10 FBP, 12 POTO

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 44 FCP and 8 SCP
They had 34 FCP and 10 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 60 points and our bench scored 11 points
Their starters scored 61 points and their bench scored 1 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 12 of our 26 field goals = 46.2%
They assisted 18 of their 22 field goals = 81.8%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 71 points in 66 possessions = 1.076 points/possession
They scored 62 points in 67 possessions = 0.925 points/ possession

It was a 133 possession game.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

13-15, 19-13, 17-13, 22-21

Fouls
(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 36 two point shots, scored 30 points in the paint, attempted 22 free throws and were fouled 19 times = 1.89; 1.58; 1.16
They attempted 28 two point shots, scored 24 points in the paint, attempted 10 free throws and were fouled 12 times = 2.33; 2.00; 0.83
Syracuse was more likely to draw a foul and to get to the line but the numbers weren’t way off as they were in Cornell game.

Comments:

- We won this one with our bench, 11 points to 1, as our starters got our-scored 60-61.

- Tyus Battle has certainly proven he’s our #1 scoring threat but Paschal Chukwu has twice sat us down in four halves. JB likes to have his team go inside to start things.

- Despite Battle’s heroics it was Frank Howard who played 40 minutes.

- We have out-scored our two regular season opponents 20-2 from the Twilight Zone this season. The mid-range jumper is a weapon for this team.

- We are back to losing the assist battle to the other team, (47%- 80% in the two games). Part of that is the lack of a true point guard but part of it is that we are not so dependent on jump shots as last year and scorers grant more assists for jump shots than they do for lay-ups.

- We have thus far avoided the bad starts that plagued us in the exhibition games, (29-21 combined in the first quarters of games. We’ll have to play 40 minute games to do well against our schedule.
