Team Stats:
(I’ve decided to put the team that won the stat in bold and ties in italics.)

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 11 of our 34 misses = 32.4%
They rebounded 15 of their 38 misses = 39.5%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We got 12 points on 11 O-Rebs = 1.091 points/O-reb
They got 19 points on 15 O-Rebs = 1.267 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 10 turnovers – 9 steals = 1 unforced
They had 8 turnovers – 4 steals = 4 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We had 7 points from 8 takeaways = 0.875 points/takeaway
They had 11 points from 10 takeaways = 1.100 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We had 19 points in 19 unsettled situations = 1.000 points
They had 30 points in 25 unsettled situations = 1.200 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 34 + 8 = 42
They had 38 + 10 = 48

Scoring

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

We were 17 for 35 on twos, (48.6%), 8 for 23 on threes (34.8%) and 16 for 17 on frees (94.1%)
They were 21 for 43 on twos, (48.8%), 8 for 22 on threes (36.4%) and 12 for 15 on frees (80.0%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

We had 28 PIP, 30 POP, 24 TREY, 6 TZ, 7 POTO, 8 FBP
They had 40 PIP, 26 POP, 24 TREY, 2 TZ, 11 POTO, 8 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)

We scored 8 FBP in 34 opportunities (23.5%)
They scored 8 FBP in 35 opportunities (22.9%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

We had 39 FCP and 12 SCP
They had 38 FCP and 19 SCP

Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)

We scored 3 points
They scored 4 points

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters scored 72 points and our bench scored 2 points
Their starters scored 61 points and their bench scored 17 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted 13 of our 25 field goals = 52.0%
They assisted 25 of their 29 field goals = 86.2%

Team Offensive Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 74 points in 65 possessions = 1.138 points/ possession
They scored 78 points in 65 possessions = 1.200 points/possession
It was a 130 possession game. (We are averaging 132 a game in regulation.)

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

9-19, 23-22, 19-22, 23-15

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

We attempted 35 two point shots, attempted 17 free throws and were fouled 14 times = 2.68; 0.94
They attempted 43 two point shots, attempted 15 free throws and were fouled 14 times =2.50; 1.21
We were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more free throws out of it when fouled.

Comments:

- Talk about efficiency: Oshae Brissett had no fouls, no turnovers and was 6 for 6 from the free throw line. His only negatives were missing 7 of 11 field goals, including the shocking air ball on an open three at the end, (he’d made three treys in this game and is 13/30 = 43% in his last 5 games).

- We had only one unforced turnover –but the Heels got 9 steals.

- UNC got 30 points in unsettled situations, (turnovers and offensive rebounds) to our 19 – in a four point game.

- We’ve lost the “manufactured possession” stat (our rebounds plus their turnovers) four times this season and are 0-4 in those games, (Wake 1, Notre Dame, Florida State and last night).

- North Carolina is the most famous fast-breaking team in the country but we fully matched them and even exceeded them slightly in this game with 8 fast break points in the one less opportunity: 34, (defensive rebounds, steal and blocks although the Heels also run on made baskets, which made this even more remarkable).

- We finally made a shot to close a half as other teams had =been doing to us but were still out-scored in last possessions, 3-4. We are -14 in last possession points this year, 9firs thalf, second half and OT).

- Fouls are not just a measure of how whistle-happy or biased the referees are. They are a measure of efficient basketball. Our Big Three of Battle, Howard and Brissett committed 3 fouls in 120 minutes. The supporting cast of Chukwu, Dolezaj, Moyer and Sidibie committed 13 fouls in 80 minutes.
