Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

Brandon Triche +18NP in 28M season: +259NP in 688M per 40M: +15.1NP
James Southerland +11NP in 20M season: +209NP in 472M per 40M: +17.7NP
Dion Waiters +11NP in 29M season: +314NP in 734M per 40M: +17.1NP
Fab Melo +11NP in 34M season: +284NP in 698M per 40M: +16.3NP
Kris Joseph +9NP in 36M season: +394NP in 972M per 40M: +16.2NP
CJ Fair +4NP in 24M season: +331NP in 842M per 40M: +15.7NP
Baye Moussa Keita 0NP in 5M season: +96NP in 359M per 40M: +10.7NP
Michael Carter-Williams -1NP in 4M season: +103NP in 261M per 40M: +15.8NP
Rakeem Christmas -1NP in 1M season: +91NP in 328M per 40M: +11.1NP
Scoop Jardine -4NP in 18M season: +302NP in 755M per 40M: +16.0NP

Comment: Scoop Jardine had one of his worst games on senior day. JB said he may have been under too much pressure. Kris Joseph did somewhat better, hitting a couple of big threes. Fab and Dion didn’t seem to feel any pressure.

Offensive Dude of the Game: Brandon Triche won it both on gross numbers, (18 points and 4 assists = 22), and per minutes, (28 minutes, or 31.4 over 40 minutes). Using gross numbers, Waiters and Joseph have been the ODOG 9 times, Jardine 8 times, Southerland and Triche 4 times and Fair once. If you go by per 40 minutes averages, Waiters has been the ODOG 9 times, Jardine and Triche 8 times, Joseph and Southerland 2, Keita, Christmas and Carter-Williams once each. (They don’t add up to 28 because of ties).

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 11/24 (..458: we are .526 on the season- we were .527 last year and .571 two years ago) from inside the arc, 8/21 from outside, (.381) and 12/18 from the line (.667). Louisville was 19/39 (.487), 2/23, (.087), and 5/7, (.714) 12 of our 19 baskets were assisted, (63%), vs. 7 of Louisville‘s 21, (33%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.

We scored 58 points in this game, 18 and 12 from the line so he had 28 POP in this game, after getting only 5 in the game at Louisville. We have 820 points outside the paint in 31 games, an average of 26.5 per game. We’ve scored 2335 points, or 35.5%, have come outside the paint. We’ve had 522 POP in 19 home games, (27.5), 298 in 12 games away from the Dome, (24.8). If you count only “true” road games, it’s 244 in 10 (24.4). We’ve had good POP games at home (Colgate, Eastern Michigan, Connecticut, Louisville) but also on the road, (NC State). We’ve had some lousy games on the road, (DePaul, Cincinnati, Louisville, Rutgers) but also at home, (Marshall, George Washington, Seton Hall, west Virginia and South Florida. So there’s no apparent pattern to home vs. road or Dome vs. normal sized basketball arena, etc.

Rebounding: Syracuse had 8 offensive and 24 defensive rebounds. Louisville had 18 offensive and 22 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 27% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 43% of the time. Louisville had 14 turnovers, of which 6 were Syracuse steals, (43%). Syracuse had 15 turnovers of which 10 were Louisville steals, (67%). We had 46 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 55. It was the 8th time this year we’ve lost that battle, 7 of them in the last 12 games. For the year we’ve manufactured 1573 possessions to 1411 for the opposition so we are up +162 in 31 games= +5.2 per game.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 45 FGA minus 8 offensive rebounds plus 15 turnovers plus 47.5% of 18 free throws = 60.55 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 61 possessions in which we scored 58 points or 0.951 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.131.

Louisville: 62-18+14 plus 47.5% of 7 = 61.325 possessions. Let’s call that 61 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 49 points or 0.803 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.907.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 9-15, 17-4, 22-12, 10-18. We’ve had 24 sub 15 point quarters this year and lost 33 quarters (of 124). Here are the averages per quarter: 16-14, 20-12, 19-16, 21-18.
