Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes. For this least post of the season I’m going to list them in order of minutes played in the season, not net points in the most recent game:

James Southerland +22NP in 19M season: +34NP in 39M per 40M: +34.9
Kris Joseph +17NP in 23M season: +31NP in 50M per 40M: +24.8
Dion Waiters +15NP in 19M season: +28NP in 41M per 40M: +27.3
CJ Fair +13NP in 25M season: +26NP in 46M per 40M: +22.6
Baye Moussa Keita +9NP in 11M season: +8NP in 20M per 40M: +16.0
Michael Carter-Williams +9NP in 15M season: +9NP in 33M per 40M: +10.9
Fab Melo +9NP in 22M season:+17NP in 41M per 40M: +16.6
Brandon Triche +6NP in 24M season: +12NP in 40M per 40M: +12.0
Rakeem Christmas +3NP in 16M season: +10NP in 36M per 40M: +11.1
Mookie Jones +1NP in 5M season: -1NP in 10M per 40M: -4.0
Scoop Jardine -2NP in 15M season: +5NP in 33M per 40M: +6.1
Comment: Southerland’s numbers are of the charts after two games. But his history is to have his best games against the worst teams so don’t get excited yet. Scoop Jardine is finding out that if he doesn’t play well, he doesn’t play. Mookie Jones seems to be trying to prove he’s an all-around player, rather than just a shooter. He’s a shooter.

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 25/48 from inside the arc, (.521), 9/23 from outside, (.391) and 15/25 from the line (.600). Manhattan was 8/27 (.296), 10/30, (.333) and 10/17, (.588). 18 of our 34 baskets were assisted, (53%), vs. 14 of Manhattan’s 18, (78%).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 19 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. Manhattan had 16 offensive and 24 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 44%. When they missed, they got the rebound 39% of the time. Manhattan had 28 turnovers, of which 15 were Syracuse steals, (54%). Syracuse had 13 turnovers of which 6 were Manhattansteals, (46%). We had 72 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 53.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 71 FGA minus 19 offensive rebounds plus 13 turnovers plus 47.5% of 25 free throws = 76.875 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 77 possessions in which we scored 92 points or 1.195 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.141.

Manhattan: 57-16+28 plus 47.5% of 17= 77.075 possessions. Let’s call that 77 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 56 points or 0.727 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.736.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 minutes quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 22-11, 30-15, 21-9, (yes even with the field goal drought), 19-21. So far we’ve scored 15+ in every quarter this year, (not counting the exhibitions)

2-0 and 29 more

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!

...as usual good digging...any way to do the following since a lot of interest is with our four guards and who should play the most...

...stats on guard combos...Scoop/Triche; Scoop/Waiters; Triche/Waiters; MCW/Waiters...just a thought 'cause for one game I thought Triche/Waiters were awesome...was i spot on or not?

^^ I thought Triche and Waiters did play well together. Stark contrast to last year when they wouldn't pass the ball to eachother. Weird what a little maturity does!

CJ Fair's performance has gone understated.

6 pts. / 6 reb / 5 stl / 2 assists / only 1 TO

and two sweet looking free throws.

I go by the box scores and they don't break that down.
