Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes. For this least post of the season I’m going to list them in order of minutes played in the season, not net points in the most recent game:

James Southerland +21NP in 21M season: +74NP in 83M per 40M: +35.7
Scoop Jardine +18NP in 16M season: +27NP in 65M per 40M: +16.6
Dion Waiters +14NP in 26M season: +51NP in 87M per 40M: +23.4
CJ Fair +13NP in 18M season: +46NP in 87M per 40M: +21.1
Baye Moussa Keita +10NP in 15M season: +37NP in 49M per 40M: +30.2
Brandon Triche +9NP in 12M season: +27NP in 71M per 40M: +15.2
Rakeem Christmas +8NP in 20M season: +25NP in 74M per 40M: +13.5
Michael Carter-Williams +6NP in 22M season: +21NP in 75M per 40M: +11.2
Kris Joseph +1NP in 13M season: +44NP in 88M per 40M: +20.0
Mookie Jones 0NP in 12M season: -3NP in 27M per 40M: -4.4
Fab Melo -4NP in 17M season: +22NP in 75M per 40M: +11.7

Comment: It will be interesting o see if James Southerland, our most productive player so far this year, can keep up this production, or at least something in range of it, against the much better teams we will play in New York. Baye Moussa Keita had 10NP without attempting a shot. Fab Melo’s line looked like something out of last season. Kris Joseph twisted his knee again in practice. Mookie Jones’ shot seems to have deserted him.

Shooting Breakdown: SU was21/35 from inside the arc, (.600), 10/28 from outside, (.357) and 20/30 from the line (.667). Colgate was 10/28 (.357), 8/25, (.320) and 3/6, (.500). 18 of our 31 baskets were assisted, (58%), vs. 10 of Colgate’s 18, (56%).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 15 offensive and 24 defensive rebounds. Colgate had 12 offensive and 23 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 40% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 33% of the time. Colgate had 26 turnovers, of which 17 were Syracuse steals, (65%). Syracuse had 9 turnovers of which 3 were Colgatesteals, (33%). We had 65 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 44.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 63 FGA minus 15 offensive rebounds plus 9 turnovers plus 47.5% of 30 free throws = 71.250 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 71 possessions in which we scored 92 points or 1.296 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.224.

Colgate: 53-12+26 plus 47.5% of 6= 69.850 possessions. Let’s call that 70 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 47 points or 0.671 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.790.

Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 20-13, 32-6, 18-15, 22-13. We’ve exceeded 15 points in every quarter this year, (we even got 21 in the third quarter vs. Manhattan). We’ve lost one quarter so far this year, the last one vs. Manhattan (19-21), but we went into that quarter up by 38

4-0 and 27 more

LET’S GO ORANGE!!!

Thx SWC ... I like reading these.

I like the score by quarters stat and I agree if we dip below 15 against a good team we might not recover.

By the way, noticed a little typo ...

...we'll have 20 and 25 minutes point quarters as well.
