New Analyst: Eugene Tulyagijja

Between this hire, Onyon as nutritionist a year or so ago and the assistants Autry has hired I'm glad we're operating like a serious program again. I'm a little skeptical of the Engelstad hire (not enough high-major experience, IMO) but I'd love to have egg on my face in six months. Either way, at least Autry has a plan and support from Wildhack. That's what enthuses me.

Head coaches don't become assistants unless they:

1) Move up a level (and pay)

2) Get fired and have no head coaching jobs available.

Syracuse is likely to never have a former P5 head coach as an assistant.

Hell, we've never hired a former P5 head coach to be our head coach, much less an assistant. (Small sample size applies.)

Who said anything about hiring a former P5 head coach to be an assistant?

Isn't that the opposite of what analytics say? The out is worth way more than the extra base.

If you're sure enough that the batter will not get a hit, you send in a pinch hitter who you have at least a little confidence in.

The analytics currently available for free to the public go into depth on shooting percentages for various players from specific situations and positions on the floor. (For example, X player hits 47% of his threes one step to the left of the top of the circle, but only on catch and shoot. The same player shoots only 29% of pick and pop from the same place.) If these new analytics guys are worth their salaries, they can do way more than that.

If they apply analytics to practice, they can figure out extremely precise things that players should or should not be doing in game action, and design plays to get players doing the things they absolutely do best, with no coaching guess work.

The analytics in baseball are simpler, because they stop in between events and batted balls are easier to track, but basketball is a wealth of information just waiting to be data mined.

I'm starting to think the analytics guys got us a winner in Carlos. We will see.
I think he was being ironical.

I'm quoting you here.

It's nice that Red has hired two outsiders as assistants, too. We needed new ideas and blood outside the program. Looks like Red recognized that and added new skills and ideas.

Agree totally. All alums can be a fun story and more fun to cheer for in some people's eyes I suppose, but when the results aren't there, who really cares? I'm not saying it was the assistants fault, but I find it hard to believe that the only qualified people for these positions are Syracuse alums.

I think Engelstad is a big reason we are suddenly seeing success recruiting foreign players.

Yeah, I didn't know anything about Fennell before but when I saw Givony tweet about him it was another indication that it's no longer business as usual.

It seemed to be more important for Jim to be comfortable and better able to command without pushback. I could be wrong.

I’m sure it’s lined up. It’s a position I would expect generates a huge list of applicants. Given AI it’s also something that will only evolve more
Yeah you should be able to establish an impressive pipeline of data analysts or aspiring data analysts wanting to work with the program and even come to Syracuse University. When the first one you ever hired got a job with the Knicks. Syracuse Sports Analytics program looking really good.

precisely. this should be a pipeline of recent grads into these roles and they get better jobs. Best marketing for the school.
