New Dream Job for Marrone?

He thought that Pegula was going to want to bring his own guys in for GM/HC...plus Whaley was just named GM so even if the Pegulas wanted to keep Whaley, there was a chance he'd want to hire "his guy" as HC. From the perspective of late 2014 it makes sense...in retrospect it might not have made any sense.

Hard to know since Whaley wasn't a great GM and he might have ended up going down with Whaley's ship anyway.

Certainly possible. But to take the buyout without another job lined up already seems short sided IMO. If nothing else, make them buy you out after another year or so, and hopefully do well and earn an extenion.

I'm italian. When someone does something that even for a moment is memorable, that's their name. Tommy Two Times. Eddie Baloney. Whatever.

He's Dream Job Marrone. It's a term of endearment

More like "Dougie Dream Job".

I often entertained that thought but the DC was not very good. He also got unlucky with Terrel Hunt's career ending injury.
Not really that’s what spawned the dungey era.

A lot to like about FHCDM and a lot to dislike as well. Undeniably a good coach but not sure I want to be in his foxhole.
Much rather be in his than Dino's, that is for sure. Doug left for an NFL job.

I don't think it was that. He figured he'd grab the quick $4 million and get to the Jets job for which he was rumored to be the front runner. I think the Jets didn't like what he did and passed.

When Hunt went down we had AJ Long, Austin Wilson and Mitch Kimble. Dungey came in the next season, which was a year fraught with online injuries.

Lmao you couldn’t possibly be more wrong. You have no idea what your talking about.

Lots of smoke out there that Doug Marrone is joining the Patriots coaching staff. No confirmation that I can find, but would be interesting.

If it bears out I'd bet an O-Line coach role.
The dead horses people keep beating

At some point, having issues everywhere he goes... perhaps HE is the issue. I do not think anyone would have begrudged him leaving for a better job. But to leave that better job in a weird way also. Seems like a difficult personality himself. Alabama fans say he ruined their offensive line the year he was there. Too busy working on the binder for the next job, I guess.
I think he got bad advice as to his market value and leverage.

Maybe so, but over time he didn't bother hiding how his disposition had soured. That hurts your recruiting, and I heard many sources at the time saying he lost his taste for it.
It seemed like we were still making inroads though. We were going to land Augustus Edwards. I bet the oline would've stayed strong. I wonder if he would've been able to land a QB.

If Doug stayed the program would have been a winner moving forward from 2012, he had real momentum, had some nice recruits lined up that never came and Doug didn't need a bunch of glitz and glitter on the recruiting end. He also would have finally had better facilities as well. He brought in enough talent necessary to win 6-9 games a year.

The O line was a tough group of kids, really good unit and that is easier said than done. 2012 O line was best I can remember in 30 years

As I recall Hunt was injured twice. In 2014 he went out for the season in the 6th game and spent the rest of the season next to the OC learning. In 2015 he reinjured his knee on the turf monster in the 1st game of 2015 when he was replaced by Dungey, who was a freshman in 2015.
Is this not correct?

That is correct, you couldn’t be more correct.

That is correct, which is why it was said earlier that Hunt's injury is what spawned the Dungey years.

My heartburn with Dougie is, when he abruptly left, he took many of his assistants with him... right before NSD. Coaches leave, but we lost recruits because of the timing.

Was really responding to zjscuse. No issue with your post. My only point was it happened a year later. 2014 was a 3-9 disaster.

We had that kid from Texas that wound up at TCU.

Like I said. I don't hate him. I actually think he's a darn good coach. But I'm always gonna call him Dream Job Marrone and thats just what it is ;)

Anyway...

I refer to him as St. Doug.

FHCDM was an excellent online coach and a darn good HC.
If he had stayed I believe we would have continued to grow. When he left we lost Gus Edwards and Zach Allen and others. We also lost a terrific staff.
We were about to join the ACC with a big bump in money.
Doug's personality was his worst enemy. Instead of embracing the alums like Coach Fran wisely has done he kept them away and let them know their input was not wanted.
Coach Fran has everyone singing from the same hymnbook while Doug sang solo. Hard to get what you want that way.
It is quite possible he would have been very successful and might even still be our HC today making more than he is as NE online coach.
He would have gotten everything he wanted and more.
His timing left Shafer scrambling to find a staff so he hired a lot of guys he knew. He took a big chance on McDonald as OC for his recruiting chops, which backfired into a disaster.
Note that coach Fran did the same thing he just picked better guys. (Jury still out on ERob.) If he had missed on Nixon we might have gone 6-6.
Doug left knowing we were graduating a ton of talent including Nassib and Pugh draftees.
I think he got while the going was good instead of sticking around to coach his best recruiting class with a newly experienced staff.
All this said he would left early anyway because he is a leaver and not a guy to stick around for the long haul.
He left one of the best 32 jobs in the country for quick cash only to become an online coach. In retrospect he might have made more in the long run at SU and/or Buffalo.

I know Nunes was kept away for trying to sell MLM / pyramid schemes. Why were some of the other alumni given the cold shoulder?
