New Special Teams Coach: Ricky Brumfield

A word of warning: Our GA Tech friend says Ricky Brumfield "was awful" and "basically fired" as ST Coordinator. Listen here:

Was he with GT when SU played them? I assume if he was that would be an interesting small sample of how good/bad he was.

One of my sales guys in atlanta who is heavily involved in gatech football said the guy left mid season and no one know why.

He was. The GT game was the second week of the season. Key acknowledged Brumfield was no longer with the team in late October.

I think the GT fan who does the videos should have acknowledged that Brumfield did well enough as the special teams coach for GT in 2023 to get a big raise and promotion for 2024. I understand, a fan wants to minimize saying good things about a lost coach.

If you look at the coaching history for Coach Brumfield, I think we can expect he will not stay here long. For whatever reason, the guy bounces from job to job very quickly.

in mid Oct last year they were leading the country in blocked kicks

ST control kick return/coverage
Punting stuff can be coached for sure but so many variables there
FG how well do you block and block kicks

We were bad at both levels of blocking on FG and Punts last yr

missing making FGs , better kickers make FGs that dont get blocked

We didnt really do much on blocking kicks, Gt did

returns on kick offs who knows. so few chances. But the big ones add up.

This post piqued my interest. It turns out the first college job for Brumfield and Ambrosie was at Union College. Not the terrific engineering school in Schenectady. The NAIA school in Barbourville, Kentucky.

They were both there from 2001 to 2003 and both got their masters from Union. I believe their head coach was a guy named John Luttrell.

What are the odds we got both these guys so closely together? I would imagine if Coach Brumfield had a chance to put in a good word about Coach Ambrosie, he did.

Someone should write a story about this, getting quotes from both coaches on their days at Union.

I bet it would be a good read (hint, hint).

Cannot be worse than what we had and an even moderate improvement on specials probably puts us in the CFP last year.
What game was lost because of special teams? Certainly not Pitt. Down to BC and Stanford

Special teams were horrible all year. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Syracuse's special teams grade of 61.3 ranked 120th among 134 FBS teams.
Yeah, and what games did they lose because of them? That was the assertion.

They were bad at times and made games closer than they should have been, but losses, not so much.

Yeah as far as losses go, Pitt was just a total What. BC was run defense and Stanford was a weird game. First game without Haynes and the offense just didn't look right.

Well that's kind of a weird ask as that should not be part of the equation imo. I could ask what games did we win because of special teams? You should have a consistent team and the special teams as a whole was consistently bad.

if Kyle doesnt throw the pick 6, Stan is trailing and we have scored 14 in a row. We got the ball back again and scored as well. Really 1 stop away from instead of trailing and being up 24-13.

Stanford had 100 yds the whole half but the 2 picks gave them 10. That would have made the last drive meaningless.

if Kyle doesnt throw the Villari doesn't run the wrong route, gifting Stan the world's easiest pick 6, Stan is trailing and we have scored 14 in a row. We got the ball back again and scored as well. Really 1 stop away from instead of trailing and being up 24-13.

FIFY.

I mean, yeah, technically Kyle did indeed throw the ball that was picked, and then easily returned for a TD.
But it was ONLY picked because Villari was rusty/had a brain fart, and totally ran the wrong route.
