New Starting QB on Friday?

Exactly. They don't need to be a serious threat to unseat Angeli next year - they just need to be adequate enough to beat NC and BC. That's the bar. And maybe, just maybe, one of them can show out enough to be a reliable fallback in case Angeli's recovery is not on schedule.

But, no we can't run with that storyline. It's too boring. Instead we have a bunch of lunatic fans here that expect the second coming of Joe Montana and Flutie's love child.
Who is doing that? The worst thing that Fran could have done was play Carney for 1 play against Colgate and have him run for a TD. The second worst thing was to play Carney for two series and have him look more comfortable in the pocket and make better decisions. Nobody is saying anyone else is going to unseat Angeli, much less be Montana/Flutie. But can we get to above Perry Patterson 2005 level passing attack? Collins can throw a deep ball... but this offense also needs to scatter the ball around the field to multiple playmakers. Collins just can't do that yet. And if the other guys look worse, Collins can always come in the game. Not like he has to be released for someone else to get PT.

Wait, Flutie and Montana had a thing? 😉

FWIW, I’m just happy with the hope that we may see something different tonight. That’s it - a W would be gravy, Italian gravy if you know what I mean.

I don’t think anyone who’s reasonable thinks Carney or Filardi will be world beaters right away. We just know Rickie isn’t and just want to see if one of these guys can be functional because that would be a major upgrade.
Functional can get us two more wins. Then we can cry about blowing an opportunity against Pitt for win 6 and/or taking the Tennessee game vs playing a chump!

Franco Pizza: The proverbial turd in the punch.

No one thinks that, we are just excited to not being subjected to Rickie anymore. And while 5-7 is a bummer because no bowl, it wouldn’t be terrible considering everything that has happened.

6-6 and a bowl may be overrated. If we get to 5-7 playing this many young guys... I think rest, healing, recruiting, retention, and transfer scouting might be more important.

There is no way Filardi is more up to speed than Carney. If he is, Carney ain't the guy either then.

Guessing it's wishful thinking from an overzealous sports radio host more than fact.
Yeah but u know some guys grab playbooks better than others. I needed to see it and then do it and then I was good. Some guys can just study book and know it. Some guys can’t do it or study it.

Maybe Jakhari is finally healthy and that's what Fran's been waiting on? Rickie or the True Frosh aren't binary decisions here. Hell, Vilardi and others that played QB at any level should be considered at this point.
If Vilardi is a Filardi skilled type of passer in a Villari type body...I'm SOLD! Start that guy!

Can we morph them into one player?!?!

I’m still high on Luke Carney. He had extensive experience running an aggressive offense (4 year starter, right, as I believe Filardi was). Both may be a little undersized but with capable arms. Will be a tough go against an all time great defensive schemer, but time to let them grow.
Both are undersized. When we signed Filardi as a walk on, i said that I think he had a shot to contribute with his skillset, but certainly didn't think he'd have a shot to play this year. Just hope one of them looks great, but personally i'd rather Carney win out. Nothing personal by any means, only reason being is he is an inch taller and 10 lbs heavier. Even just having 1 more inch in height means he is that much more likely to succeed. Its hard to succeed and stay healthy when your 6'-1" and 195 lbs as Filardi is. And that is his roster listed size so he's probably a tad smaller than even that.

and then Filardi can still star for us in lacrosse! Though if he wins the football job great for him and us.

He is giving up 3 inches and 50 lbs to Villari. I think that checks out by looking at them back to back. Give the size of one, the other checks out... and vice-versa. Not like Filardi is 5'9' or something. His issues right now will not be height, weight, etc... we'll see what happens.

Probably should be noted Filardi’s weight went from 170 to 195 since he has been on campus.

That makes it a lot more feasible for him to play at this level. It’s tough for any true freshman to play quarterback, but he’s a lot better positioned physically than he was last fall.

Whenever I see a reference to Doug Flutue, I think about how he became a starter at BC. He was an unknown in HS. He was not recruited by any D1 schools and was only added by BC at the last minute because BC was turned down by the 2 other QBs they were recruiting.

He was 5th (!) on the QB depth chart at the start of his true FR year. During the 4th game of the season, at Penn State, all the BC QBs ahead of him were injured or proved they weren't effective. Flutie came in the second half and completed his first five passes, threw a touchdown, and showed he had quickness and solid decision making. BTW, he was returning punts for BC.

By the 6th game, he was the starter at QB vs Army and proceeded to start every game for the next 44 games.

OK, that was 44 years ago, yes it was a different time; but I wouldn't write off Carney, Belin or Filardi until we see them get a chance. 5th stringers can become starters.

LET'S GO ORANGE! We need this win tonight.

Not too long ago Sean Tucker was fifth or sixth on our depth chart and now he is a Tampa Bay Buc

I think Filardi was 185 lbs when he arrived. Weather that was his hudle listing or what I can't remember. I think the 170 lb listings were from sometime in HS. Not sure when he went from 170 lbs to 185 lbs. Some of it may have been post his 2024 HS season. But him being up to 195 lbs at this point is certainly much better. Lets hope he looks even bigger than his earlier Cuse.com photos. 6'-1" is certainly not optimal and makes it more difficult for him, but also doesn't make it out of the question that he will be successful.

Julian Sayin is 6'-1" 208 lbs and leads the nation in completion % at 80%. But Filardi will not be playing behind the OSU O-line either.

Just looking forward to a QB playing who at least looks like he has it in his HS highlight films. Both Carney and Filardi check that box for me. Lets hope it translates stepping up to the college game.

Paulus was listed at 6-1, 195 lbs. as a RS-Sr., fwiw. He was (arguably more than) serviceable, all else equal.

Comical...people were trying to talk themselves into Carney being the man. He's from Texas - he must be good! His one snap against Colgate really showed me something! He has "it!"

Now you're trying to talk yourselves into Filardi coming out of the blue and becoming the man. NY player of the year! Great mechanics! He has the "intangibles!"

I expect more lousy QB play and an offense that is mostly inept. Hopefully I'm wrong and this isn't just a way to generate some buzz about a game most couldn't care less about otherwise.
Maybe that's the case, but at least it's not Rickie Collins. I'd rather watch a true frosh struggle than a portal NIL guy.
