New Starting QB on Friday?

If he can scramble to create passing opportunities and running first downs, I am all in on this type of player. The incumbent does not scramble and look to pass which, in my view, is a killer flaw.
That's an excellent point and something I've noticed. When Rickie runs, he does not look upfield to see if anyone gets open.

I'm not defending Ricky. I'm telling you all that we don't have a QB and begging for one of the other backups is an exercise in futility.

First, there is a clear disconnect between practice performance and "gives us the best chance to win" if we take Coach Fran at his word. We have no idea how Belin or Carney or even Filardi would do in a game environment.

So let's assume that none of the younger guys give us a great chance to win, either. The lesson I hope the staff learned from Collins is that it's hard to assess "it" from practice only. Collins may have looked decent in practice but he doesn't have "it". Same way you could see that Devito did not have "it" in that horrible Clemson game I attended back in 2019 or whatever.

There is value in seeing whether any of the other guys have "it" whether or not you think they give us a chance to win. It helps you figure out whether to keep them all next year, and how much portal work you have this offseason.

More important than all of that is showing fans that you will think outside the box to try to win. We gave Rickie 4 weeks to run the offense. First 3 weeks... 3 INTs and 11 PPG. Last week... simplified things to avoid turnovers perhaps... but still just 17 points. So we are at 50 points after 4 weeks (2 being a safety) = 12 PPG. I get that the other guys might not be ready... but the bar is 12 PPG. 2 FGs and 1 TD and we are above that. At least let a younger guy TRY to get it done.

Devito ended up starting at a B10 school and made the NFL. The only one who didn't have 'it' was Babers. And to be clear I was just as much of a Tommy detractor as anyone. It blew my mind to see him succeed and that really was all I needed to see about Dino. I know we are off topic but saying Tommy doesn't have 'it' is not a good look anymore.

As for our other guys...Either they have it, or don't, or they can play or they can't. - Mr Blonde.(ish)

Get what done? Get to a bowl? Nobody answered my original question. What season did we finish over .500 after losing the starting QB for the season in the first 4 games?

Also it is not 'more important than all of that' to appease the fans. Fran is building a program. If he does, the fans will come. I don't think he cares about showing you he can think outside the box.

Just in the last 10 years we’ve had numerous backup QB’s from lower level programs, show up and play really well. How is it we have no backup QB that can even complete a decent amount of passes.

Luke in the 3 minutes he was in the game completed as many passes as Collins does in 1 quarter. I’ll take my chances with the guy that can at least complete a pass and see what he also might be able to do.

Because our backups who can complete passes end up in the portal. We aren't high enough for the platform to feed us properly. We get what those above did not want.

I'm fine with seeing Luke, my whole point was for everyone to lower their expectations if we do see the backups.

Our backups have limited packages, not the whole playbook - I don't want to hear complaining about the play calling when it's vanilla.

Our backups have not led us to winning seasons in the past. If we are on to 3rd string+, I do not EXPECT to win more than 1 more game this year. Upset is almost impossible and NC/BC are pickems. Odds say we will win 1 out of the 2.

Would I expect Ricky to win more than 1? No not really so save that argument. This was never about me defending Ricky, simply put one more time...I think our fate is already decided so I'm more concerned with our younger guys getting meat grinded/emotional damage than I am winning at this point.

Fran on Orange Nation confirmed multiple QBs will play and wouldn’t guarantee Collins starting(reading between the lines he won’t) paraphrasing he said Rickie had 4 games and now we need whatever we need to do to win.

This is all we can ask from him, try someone else, there's nothing to lose. Sometimes kids are gamers, I see it every day. Kids that are average practice players who for whatever reason a switch is flipped on game days and they perform at a high level. Adrenaline, hype, playing in front of fans? Beats me what the driver is but it's a legit thing, when the lights come on they go. Maybe the same will apply to one of these backup QBs.

We don’t know if they can compete since they have not been given a chance.we know Ricky can’t .

#1, appeasing the fans IS part of his job. We are the ones that decide whether to buy tickets or watch the game. If I prefer to NOT watch the same story play out week after week, that is my choice. If he wants me to watch the game, so that the AD can make more money, so that he can get paid more and have more resources... then I would recommend a product with hope for something. I am not demanding a win. I am just demanding hope... which Rickie cannot provide. At this point, I would just like to see us not being blown out before the 4th quarter.

#2 I am also demanding to not see the same terrible story over and over again. The beauty of sports is that it is not supposed to be scripted. I am not supposed to KNOW that on 1st and 1 from the 1... we will NOT score. I am not supposed to KNOW that on 3rd and 1 from anywhere, Rickie is not picking up that first down and neither will Nixon or Willis out of the backfield. This is the worst offense that I have seen since GRob's first year. No excuse. Nixon is not a rookie OC. Nixon has "his" offense. Rickie has an offense that would suit him. These two offenses clearly do not align. Perhaps changing QBs will force Nixon to try something else.

#3 Who said anything about expectations? We have a kid just out of high school. We do not expect him to have a QBR of 150. But can the kid get his own game of 10 drives to see what he can do with his arm and feet??? The bar is absurdly low. GRob's 2005 team went 1-10 and scored 11 PPG in its losses. Can we get 10 points before the half? Can we get 3 FGs and a TD to score 20 in a game?

#4 I am resigned to a season of 3, 4, or 5 wins. My over/under was 5.5. You cannot play Tennesee, Clemson, ND, Georgia Tech, SMU, and Miami on the road and expect to win more than 1. I did not think we could get the monkey off our back against Pitt... and was very worried about Duke given what they did last year and who they added. I figured 1-5 on the road... and either 4-2 or 5-1 at home. 4-2 at home is still on the table.

Edit: #5. If a guy struggles this year and it ruins his career emotionally, good riddance. I worry more about injuries than hurt feelings/ego. Dungey and Haynes King type guys are needed. Not people who need to take their cat to the grocery store for companionship...

Why is it overblown? And I haven't heard his camp express it either, but i don't see why a player wouldn't want to preserve a redshirt in the conditions I posted above. If i was him, i would. And if I was the staff, I would want him to preserve it.
If carney is getting paid he should wanna play unless he has a redshirt year in his pay which means he didn’t get much.

And something that could slow the game down for him. When you can scramble you can reduce duress, it helps slow the game down and breaks the back of the defense if you convert. Wish he could get to that point, but 4 starts in…

This is a good, well-reasoned post. Nobody needs us to win, though it would be nice. We do want it to look like the coaches are trying everything they can.

He could redshirt over the next two years with Angeli coming back. Who cares about redshirting? The chance any player stays at one school for five years is miniscule.
