New Starting QB on Friday?

Fran is handling this very terrible situation as well as he could, if you ask me, maybe not perfect, but this is an impossible situation. Here what I think based on the timing, either they have green lighted Carney to run the offense and he’ll burn the redshirt, but get plenty of experience in the meantime. Or it’s one of the other freshmen that they have green lighted to run the offense and no matter what happens they will be able to gain experience and preserve the redshirt. You wonder in a different world if Angeli went down last week at Georgia Tech vs when he went down vs Clemson, if Rickie would’ve been the guy to take over. Perhaps they knew Rickie wasn’t the best in the QB room after Steve, but the timing called for them to see if he can prove them wrong. It seems they were protecting who was actually QB2 and is now ready to shine with a preserved redshirt and understanding of the playbook. Atleast this would be best case scenario for the S.

I don't see why Carney wouldn't be the starter or at least the main QB against UNC considering he has been the one who has actually got on the field a tad and hasn't really screwed anything up. I don't see why he couldn't start against UNC and BC. Then play some combination of Belin, Filardi and Rickie for Miami as we are very unlikely to win that game anyway. This gets us a look at least one other player too and saves Carney's redshirt. I mean does Carney playing in one more game against a highly ranked team on the road where we are unlikely to win, worth losing a redshirt for Carney. This assumes we have hopes of him being a future starter here and that he would prefer to preserve his redshirt.

And I know Carney could technically redshirt next year depending on what happens, but this makes the situation with him much easier moving forward. And it makes him much more pleased with his situation this year at SU and increases the likelihood he sticks around.

I think this is an issue of Carney family wanting to redshirt, but perhaps also realizing that if he can do better than 11 PPG... he might get himself in line to be a solid QB#2 next year... here or elsewhere... or perhaps even a QB#1 somewhere else. Maybe Fran had to assure that he will be on the roster next year if it goes very very poorly. But, with the bar so low right now, little downside into playing. If we get 6 points in the first half, that will be the first time we scored twice in a first half since Clemson.

I mean if Carney kills it against UNC and it looks like we may have a fair shot at winning at Miami and him competing with Angeli next year for starter, then OK i could see this take. Otherwise, if he looks just somewhat solid or not ready yet, then I don't play him against Miami. I think redshirting him is the smart play.

Yes you play for now and that is the main goal, but future has to have some concern in decision making to the staff.

Why is it overblown? And I haven't heard his camp express it either, but i don't see why a player wouldn't want to preserve a redshirt in the conditions I posted above. If i was him, i would. And if I was the staff, I would want him to preserve it.

I have no inside info but could Rich Belin get the nod at QB? Was a True freshman who was a two-time All-State QB and won the 2023 Gatorade POY for New York.

I've posted this before but Rich can really ball. He has looked good in the practices I've watched. Great athlete.

Yup I cant imagine after watching 4 straight weeks of Collins on tape they can't try someone else. The tape was so bad after 2 games that I thought they would make the change or at least mix somone else in more but the tap only got worst the more Collins played.

If Luke stands back in the pocket and fires random passes down field with his eyes closed he won't be any worse than what we've seen the past 4 games.

Yeah it could be first half for Carney, if he looks good you keep playing him the second half. If not then you see what either Belin or Filardi has in the second half if they are close to Carney at this point. But i don't see a situation where Carney isn't playing unless he has pissed the staff off for some reason with his stance on something.

Yup nothing against Ricky personally but you gotta see waht else we have. Again maybe its a complete disaster and prover Fran's initial thoughts right but at least you emptied the tank and gave some of the other guys a shot. Maybe Carney or Filardi or Belin catch lighthing in a bottle and you get better QB play. Gotta give at least 1 or 2 of these guys a shot to see what happens.

Just watched Fran’s video with Steve Infanti. He plans on playing other QBs, too.
