New year...new mojo...can we bring back the "chop" on kickoffs?

That would be nice. Both sides have to have interest in it. That may be the biggest stumbling block.
There's a native american tradition at the Rochester Nighthawks games. It's pretty cool to see, and it's not a bad idea to respect the indigenous culture that created the game.

No. The School tries to hard to establish traditions (Ernie Davis Legends' Field; statues galore; abundance of retired jerseys; bells; trail whistles; etc.). Mostly in the name of trying to fill the void left by near two decades of suckitude. Nobody outside Syracuse diehards knows squat about anything of these things except maybe the significance of "44," and that's because multiple players kicked ass wearing that number.

Keep winning games, and the traditions will emerge on their own.

We had traditions, but they killed them all. The chop on kickoffs, the “amen” song at the end of hoop victories, the “hey!” song/chant...rowdy fans. The school put the kibosh on everything at some point. It’s a AAA baseball game atmosphere now. “Trendy” songs and kiss cams for all!!

I have fond memories of it, being in the band and all. But the reality is that almost no one aside from the students ever did it. It such a weird dynamic at SU, but most of the crowd really acts too cool for school when it comes to doing anything besides “let’s go orange”.

And there is less than zero chance that’s SU is going to reinstate an Indian chop in 2019.

I’m all for developing a new kickoff tradition though.

How about a prolonged drum roll right before the kick-off with the fans voicing a prolonged “O-o-o-u-u-rrrrrr...”, then when the the kicker’s foot meets the ball, a roaring “...HOUSE!!!”.

(Thanks, but no need to compliment me for my brilliant suggestion.)

I like that. Like "ohhhhhh" right before the kick. When he kicks off, "Whose house? Our house?"

We could all chant something that signifies the sound of a citrus attack - like “splat”. At the least it would be disconcerting.

Hmmn, that differs from my memory. My memory is that it was done by most of the crowd, at least in big games like the Florida, Tennessee, etc.

I agree there's no way it would be reinstated in this political climate.

But bottom line is that we had something that worked, like the OP said. And now we don't.

What if they just played the song again?

None of the students are going to know about the chop. I doubt enough of the rest of the crowd would remember/care enough to start doing it on their own. But the song! It’s tradition and it sounds good, and it’s perfect for the buildup to a kickoff.
