Next year - QB?

This has been a great year - our high profile QB is everything we could hope for. He takes advantage of a nice collection of WRs. Not sure when we see such a good passer wearing Orange & Blue again. Well worth the $$$.

Anyone have any insight on the recruitment cycle for next year's QB? Any early guesses?

i.e. BC's QB?

Let's enjoy the ride, but man, next year's schedule. Away games - Tennessee, ND, Clemson, Miami

Happy Thanksgiving week!
A good showing against Miami and a bowl win, and our QB slot will be very attractive in the portal, esp with McCord's play this year and Coach's obvious ability to know how to run a pass-oriented offense (we have a great shot to lead the nation in passing yardage).

Our boosters ponied up big money to bring Kyle here, and that was for a “discount” compared to what Nebraska and others may have been offering. We struck gold with Fran’s family connections.

All across the country every offseason now, QB free agency is going to be the most sought after and competitive NIL arms race, followed by OL. Look at the competition schools had over cam ward. Florida state and Miami were fighting it out over him and DJU, both paid millions to get their guy - one of which is in the Heisman talks and another of which got benched.
Remember this 2024 incoming top transfer QBs article that McCord didn’t even make? It’s a crap shoot.

If I’m a booster, I see next years schedule as a developmental year. See what we have on the roster or maybe bring in a young guy to compete, try to find your CJ Bailey (or get him), your Philo at GT, your Holstein at Pitt, Colandrea at UVA etc. if it doesn’t work out, that money can be invested and used towards a hot commodity in 2026
Every year we should try to get the best players available to us that we can afford while simultaneously developing the under belly. I don’t understand the notion that we shouldn’t look for upgrades because our schedule is hard next year. Seems silly.

That was a big disappointment yesterday, I had really hope - especially after the first TD - that we MIGHT have a chance to see Williams in briefly for a series or two at the end of the game.
If McCord opts out of the bowl game I really hope to see JW. be the starter over MJ JR. I don't think CDW. would be in the picture at all.

UNLV didnt want to pay him once they realized the other kid was better
That doesn’t seem to fit the narrative that he was only paid 3k out of the promised $100k and he started the first 3 games.

Because we are competing against countless other schools that will be doing the same, it’s a zero sum game we don’t have infinite resources. I want to make a bowl next year, but in all likelihood we don’t have a chance at the playoff with that schedule so why go all-in with limited NIL resources? We save and can really make a splash for 2026 and a more winnable schedule. This is the evaluation that has to be done now in the NIL world, it’s why programs hire GMs. I get as fans we want to win every game every year, but we need to be realistic and realize there’s a business strategy to this. Just as NFL teams tank for top draft picks, colleges will save NIL funds for when the schedule is doable

Has nothing to do with them quitting. Passers. We need a passer. If we went from McCord to either one of them that would be an incredible downgrade
Look at what Rourke did at IU … there will be options.

If I was a betting man, I would bet that Fran already has someone in mind from the portal. At the very least, Fran knows what he needs to win.
This. Fran will be proactive. Feelers have already been sent I presume. Fran doesn’t screw around. It obvious

I heard that Fran is going after Chad Powers, some transfer QB from a college in Pennsylvania. The kid runs fast and thinks fast, we'll be fine.
I had heard Dreaj Foge was on the table at one point.

Sorry, the BC kid is a nice athlete, might be a good Trebor Pena type of receiver if he has good hands and can run decent routes. Who will be available in the portal we can get? How about what we have on hand. Is a competition among the young guys the best way to go? This is where the coaches need to make the best evaluation.

There will be several great options in the portal, just a matter of the fit and more importantly if we will pay the money needed to land one, the kid from Tulane or Wazzu are first ones rumored to be going to the portal.

Both quit on their teams mid season. No thanks.

But I’ll phrase it differently - I’m done with QBs who can’t throw. Is that better?

If Sluka could pass, I’d take him. Considering him a quitter based on how things apparently played out at UNLV is a ridiculous take.

It would be equivalent to saying McCord is a quitter because he left Ohio State when they wouldn’t guarantee he’d be the starter this year. You can take absurd positions like that, and that you wouldn’t want him because he’s a quitter - but it’s a bizarre view in 2024.

McCord didn’t leave OSU mid season. Different situation completely. Sluka left when they realized QB2 was better and they didn’t want to pay him.

Regardless, we can and should aim higher.

I spoke to Diggs after the game yesterday and he said he’s definitely playing in the bowl game. I don’t think he will be the only one.
Well that’s good because we’ll need 22 kids to suit up. Unless they can play both ways.

I’d rather not roll out the true frosh or Jakari to “get experience” next year. I’ve seen more careers ruined that way. Andrew Robinson nearly died.
