Since we all must be bored as hell as witnessed by the 1,000+ post Marrone thread (my goodness who really cares anymore?), I thought it might be fun to speculate on the open NFL jobs. Bearing in mind the NFL owners pass on or make the final HC decisons, anything is possible, here are mine.
Teams with horrible defenses
Atlanta Falcons - the common wisdom is that the Falcons are set on offense since they have Matt Ryan at QB - they were 12th in total offense. They were 27th in total defense. My favorite choice is Rex Ryan. Rex has never had an offense as potent as the current Falcons offense and Matt Ryan is light years ahead of any Jets QB in well, as long as I care to remember.
Teams with horrible offenses
Buffalo Bills - Mike Shanahan (with his son as OC). The Bills want someone to coach up EJ Manuel and this may be the combo to do it. Besides, who else would go there now.
San Francisco 49ers - The Niners were 25th in total offense and 10th in total defense. Still, the Niners could go OC or DC. However, I am going with long shot Adam Gase (OC Denver Broncos). He is only 36 with no HC experience and only two years as Bronco OC.
Teams with horrible everything
Oakland Raiders - Ranked dead last in total D and second from last in total O, the Raiders could go either way but what they really need is a HC with experience. Jack Del Rio, Denver DC could be the best choice. He has had really good defenses everywhere he has been. He has HC experience with a 68-71 record at Jacksonville with three playoffs (1-2). With Jacksonville that is a good record! He had absolutely no offense to work with at one of the weakest NFL franchises. Del Rio is a California native. Carr is probably the best QB Del Rio would coach as a HC. This make too much sense and the Raiders probably won't do it! Still, my choice is Jack.
NY Jets - I think the Jets problems were caused primarily by the worst GM in NY football history. That said, they now need a HC that can sort this mess out. While they probably should pick someone with HC experience, like Saint Doug, they probably are too stupid to do so. My guess - Dan Quinn (DC Seattle Seahawks). He was DL coach for the Jets in 2007-2008 and is a Jersey kid.
Chicago Bears - The Bears could do anything, after all they hired Trestman. Since they were second from last in total defense it would seem that fixing the D is the top priority. On the other hand their O stunk as well (24th) so they might go for a QB fixer. They have a bundle of talented offensive players so perhaps all they need is to deal with the Cutler issue and move on. Chicago is a defensive town - my pick is Todd Boyles (DC Arizona Cardinals).
What are your guesses?
