Nick Williams to FSU

Let the new DC bring in his own guys; it is what it is. Williams is a good guy and has a reputation as a great recruiter, but our defense has been awful the last two years. We need a change.

Fran needs assistant coaches that can develop kids and I am not sure with his defensive staff the past two years this was ever going to happen. Has to find a balance with recruiting and scheme/ development on his staff. The floor obviously wasn't high enough this year or last year on defense.

Fran's strength is recruiting, hire to mask your weaknesses and that is what he is doing here on defense. Clearly, with a another qb or two that can run Nixon's offense we know that it can at a minimum produce points. The defense needed a complete overhaul and that wasn't happening with the current staff. The new DC runs the show on defense and is bringing in his guys.

At first you think, "Losing Nick Williams is not a good thing." And that's probably true in some ways, but I just feel it's gonna work out. The coaching staff will be refreshed in a way that helps the overall team. We know Fran can recruit players, let's see how he does with recruiting coaches. So far so good great.

Yeah, as was posted up-thread, it doesn't matter if the DL guys are great crooters,
IF they can't coach up that talent.

And it never seemed like either of them did that, at all.
I mean, we haven't had a double-digit sack guy since 2018:
when we had TWO - Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson.

Maybe at a factory school they can get away with just having soooo much talent, that the lack of "coaching up" isn't a detriment to success.

This also clears the deck for the new DC to hire "his guys".

I'm sure Fran is glad his 2 buddies both very much landed on their feet.
And I am also sure that Fran likely helped make that happen.

Not to sound like an FSU apologist, because I'm not and I hate them, buuut they are a lot closer to turning things around then we are after what we saw this year. Castellanos is a terrible P4 QB. They were always going to be limited by him. If they get an actual good QB this year they will have more success. They are stacked, always are.

With that said, Norvell is also an average coach and shouldn't be there any more. But they beat a playoff team this year and our best win was a 7-5 Clemson.
Eh I don’t know if I agree with that. Castellanos stunk before they brought him in. With the resources they have available, they should never have been in a position to have to rely on him. The only thing he does well is run his mouth.

I think in a nutshell this is a prime example of how inept Norvell is and as long as he’s there, they will be as well. Irrespective of the talent on the roster. Now if they dumped him and were bringing in an ace HC this year, I’d agree with you.

Well, we tried having great recruiters on the staff at the expense of having good X's & O's coaches. That failed miserably. While it would be great to have coaches who have both attributes, they are a rare and very expensive breed. Bring in coaches who can game plan, make adjustments in-game and coach up players. Fran will make sure we can recruit the players we need.

I think this season was a bit of a watershed moment for Fran. Does he continue down the Deion Sanders path, all flash no bang, or does he diversify his recruiting prowess and surround himself with people that can actually develop the talent he brings in? Good to see it’s the latter.

Agree-The Dabo model (Pre-NIL).

While I agree, I view recruiting more as marketing, and in a role like DL coach, you need more than a marketer.

Nah, if FSU can make do with him coaching a position then we can to. We've done the can't recruit good coach thing before. We have to have to have recruiters to., He was dynamic, FSU probably hiring him because he kicked their asses down in Florida.

I don't know anything about Nicks actual coaching ability but there was no questioning his motivated style. Came across as being an intense high energy guy.
