No Combine Invite for Ishmael

He physically abused clemson/lsu/nc st/fsu coverage.

Dominating db’s like that isnt systematic

Well the NFL doesn't view him as a prospect. Don't know what to tell you. I didn't see him as an NFL prospect prior to this year, and plenty of NFL guys make it as undrafted guys.

My basic point was even if he is an NFL guy, he's a fringe guy. What will happen in this offense when we get legit top-tier talent?

I'm amazed to, but I'm sure there are a bunch of NFL teams that are happy he's not gonna be there. He's a diamond in the rough

He’ll have a 1,600 yard 17 td season and be drafted in the 6th round.

Very good point. This is BS. SI has the body , hands , smarts, route talent , ability to get off the line, and competitive nature to be a 4th rounder. Even if he runs a 4.5-4.6...he will catch balls in the NFL.
If he ran a 4.5-4.6 he'd he would definitely be an NFL prospect. Problem is that he is probably closer to a 4.8-4.9 guy. As I've said before, Ish is a TE trapped in a WR body.

I hope he proves all the scouts wrong.

I think speed is definitely a factor with him but is he really that slow?

Jerry Rice was a 4.71 out of college. To my eye...Steve is significantly slower than him.

I still think he'll get a chance somewhere. You can't coach his heart and his hands are amazing.

He fights for every ball, is athletic, tough to bring down, and makes plays.
He’d make a very good possession WR, especially effective in the red zone, IMO.
I don’t see him as a TE, don’t know if he’s that good of a blocker.
Really surprised he’s not invited.

If jarvis landry’s slow ace can command a top 10 contract, i think ishmael can at least be invited to the combine

Agreed...except I wasn't suggesting he should be considered as a TE. My point was that his skill set, especially his speed/quickness, is very TE-like.

This is an indictment on Scott Shafer.
This is his first recruiting class and it not a single one is even invited to the combine.

As much as I've been a Shafer apologist, I have to agree with this. Proof is in the pudding and to get completely shut out of the combine when Western Michigan is sending 4 is ridiculous. Done defending Shafer at this point.

Jarvis Landry was a second round pick. He also strained his hamstring during the combine which resulted in a bad 40 he improved the time during the pro day to 4.51. I like Ishmael but the two are not comparable.

Landry improves his 40 time at LSU Pro Day
Of course im not comparing the talent level, just both are slow with great hands.

I've always thought a WR would be crazy for not picking Syracuse with the offense we run. Now I'm starting to wonder if WR's shy away from a school with an offensive system like Syracuse. Perhaps the thought may be that, even if you put up All American numbers vs. ACC competition, (Ish and Amba) the scouts at the NFL level just see you running 100 plays a game, and inflating your stats. Could this offense actually turn away some big time receivers?

No. Losing turns away big time receivers. Even without winning yet, our WR recruits look better on paper. Look at some of the WR classes that Texas Tech, Baylor and Washington State have gotten after they started winning. Kids don't care about the system. They want the ball in their hands.

Good point, the fear of being labeled a system guy. That said, many schools are running RPO systems.

I think "system guy" is far more detrimental to QB's than WR's. If you put up big numbers as a WR in any system and if you have the measurables, then nothing else really matters.
Seems to working out pretty good for Jimmy G

You are a good man for adjusting your perspective based on new facts, and this is a new fact which I think is frankly damning for the legacy of Scott Shafer at Syracuse. Keep in mind folks, last year our only combine participant was Amba, who was recruited by Dino from Maryland. So that's the 2013 & 2014 recruiting classes producing zero combine worthy talent. If we somehow whiff again this coming year it will mean that not a single Scott Shafer recruit was even good enough to go to the combine. Again, damning.
