Basically by beating other SEC teams. They were 1-4 against teams outside of the SEC in the playoffs with the lone win coming against the mighty Tulane.

And MD isn’t far behind. Texas and Oklahoma too in a different way. Joining the SEC made their chances of getting to a national championship, when they joined, very rare. Their path was far easier staying where they were.

This is what all these schools don’t understand.

The playoff losses show the cracks in the armor. We need the early season wins to establish the reputation for the year that leads to multiple playoff births for the conference.

Coaching acumen highly favors Indiana here so I still go with them. Still gotta get through Oregon though which I think they do.

Also saw that the average age of this year’s Indiana football team is 23 years old (for comparison - the Green Bay Packers who almost won a road playoff game last night avg age is 25 years old).

Cignetti is clearly a great coach, but he also recognized that it helps having a team of grown men playing against college teams.

Any idea of how many of those players were on the team last year?

It'll be interesting to see how well the success is sustained. With an average age of 23, that has to mean a lot of guys are leaving. I also saw where someone said they don't play a lot of backups. That makes we wonder if there is talent currently on the team for next year or if they play plan to reload heavily via the portal.

Cignetti certainly knows what he's doing. I'll be paying attention to them.

I think it will be a close game. Indiana went from underrated to overrated after the big Alabama win, but many don't realize how mediocre Bama has been. I said it before the selection that they shouldn't make the playoffs, but would b/c of SEC bias. SEC 0-5 in the playoffs this year, while ACC 3-0.

This tells me a few things.

1. Great talent evaluator
2. Great culture —> Great team chemistry
3. Great player development
4. Filled in holes with high impact portal transfers
