Notre Dame

ND is really hurting this year. The loss of Abromaitis means they lost about 14 ppg and 7 rpg. The only real player they have is Atkins. They are 6-4 right now with absolutely no quality wins. Legitimately they lost to Missouri and Gonzaga and perhaps Maryland (5-3) in Maryland. But they also lost to a very mediocre Georgia (4-5) team at home. This may be their worst year in the BE.

That's ok, they have football independence and can glom on to the big east for basketball relevance.

I think the ND thing underscores a larger point in that people aren’t realizing how bad the bottom quarter to half of the BE is this year. I think when people talk about What losses, they aren’t realizing that this isn’t the Big East of the last few years where even the worst teams can beat anyone. It might be an easier ride than some might think.

Notre Dame(2 seed last year)without Abro is awful. St. John’s(6 seed, played us tight in the BET) has 6 scholarship players in their first year, none of whom can shoot. Rutgers(took us to OT last year) might be the worst team I’ve seen this year and might not score 45 on us. Providence sucks and we get them twice. Depaul and USF, enough said. Seton Hall(beat us last year) has 2 players, and look to be an easy team to defend(although I’m signing Herb Pope up for 15 boards). Nova is down, Pitt appears to be down and we get them at home, Louisville, despite not having lost, is probably closer to the 16th ranked team in the country than 6th. Marquette just lost Otule for the season, huge loss for them.

One more thing, look at our road games: NC State, Depaul, Providence, Nova(we’ll have 40% of that crowd), ND, Cincy, SJU(call that a neutral), Louisville, RU(guessing a neutral), UConn. Not exactly a meat grinder.

Not saying our team is infallible or will go undefeated, but turn on SNY and watch some of these teams play. A lot of them have substantial issues.

I was thinking that for quite a while ... there is quite a discrepancy between the top teams in the BE and then all the other also-rans. They have projected 7 BE teams to the NCAA ... SU, L'Ville, UConn, Marquette (possibly..but w/o Otule??), Cincy (eh), Pitt, and possibly G'Town? Of those only SU, L'ville, and UConn are really legitimate (Marquette would have been w/o the loss) ... Pitt and Georgetown are presently ranked but I don't see that holding up for G'Town once the conference season starts ... Pitt and Dixon always surprise me.

Yah that doesn't look too bad at all.

I'll be interested to see how that impacts our seeding in March, if at all. We have dwarfed the top ACC teams in # of quality road wins in recent years but haven't benefited from it much in the seeding. I can see Gottlieb now saying "they lost their only two tough road games!"; but if the committee is consistent that shouldn't hurt us much - Duke beat one NCAA team on the road (Clemson) two years ago.
