Now that GMac is HC, what does next year's squad look like?

Haha - I like where your head's at! Let's circle back on this after next season starts... I might be able to be convinced to make a bet on whether or not he signs a 2-way contract after the draft (like Daniss Jenkins did). I am, after all, a degenerate gambler at heart!
I'm not yet, but I mean, why not start now?

I figure I'd win either way.

If he's Cuse I want to restore our NBA pipeline.

If he doesn't get to the NBA as a first rounder, I got a hundo.

Win win!

In 2022-23, Iona College (a MAAC team) made the NCAA Tourney and lost in the opening round. They had two pretty good guys in their backcourt that year - below are their conference statistics from that season, and how that compares to a kid named Gavin Doty who played for Siena last year (a MAAC team):

Player A: ORtg=122.1 (4th best in MAAC); Usage=24.9%; TS%=61.6 (3rd best); FTs=92%; 2-pt FGs=50.4%; 3-pt FGs=45.3%

Player B: ORtg=113.0 (10th best in MAAC); Usage=25.6%; TS%=52.2; FTs=80.9%; 2-pt FGs=47.1%; 3-pt FGs=33.3%

Doty (2025-26): ORtg=125.3 (4th best in MAAC); Usage=24.1%; TS%=59.3 (8th best); FTs=86%; 2-pt FGs=54.5%; 3-pt FGs=35.7%

Player A is Walter Clayton. He transferred from the 'lower league' of the MAAC up to Florida (SEC Conference) and led them to the NCAA Championship last year. He was a first-round draft pick in last year's NBA Draft.

Player B is Daniss Jenkins. He transferred from the 'lower league' of the MAAC up to St. John's (Big East Conference) and was the Johnnies' best backcourt player in 2023-24. He went undrafted, but signed with the Pistons and is a key part of their rotation (currently starting with Cade Cunningham hurt).

Who knows what Gavin Doty will turn into? (I certainly don't know.) But I do know enough to know that players transfer up from leagues like the MAAC to the SEC, Big East and ACC and perform well all the time... and recognizing that fact is not in any way indicative of being part of "the cult of Gerry" in any way.

Anecdotal evidence doesn’t prove anything. Can someone make the jump? Sure.

Is it likely? Especially when accounting for other factors? That’s the question.

Come on. We’re better than this.

Really let George move on
When you are starting a new team and system the worst thing you can do is bring in someone who has shown when things get rough they quit. If you have done it once there is a good chance you'll do it again.
Freeman despite the talent sould be a hard pass.
Plus the injury bug is real.

Uhm, IMatt... you don't get to decide that.

If there's only so much money to spend - which is always the case - he's not my highest paid player next year. He's not my second highest paid player, either.

We need a very good center with size, and we need a very good PG who can get by people on the dribble and also hit a three.

Donnie is an OK small forward, but he's not a "big". If he's back, I start Sadiq at PF, Donnie at SF, and a really good big man at center.

Would you bet your season on Donnie if you were a first year coach?
Would you spend the biggest chunk of your money on him, or on somebody else?
It isn’t smart to bet most of your NIL on any one player.

Doty is apparently getting 700k which is good because he’s a good player and we aren’t overpaying.

That gives us plenty of room to keep adding good players in the portal with our budget.

Of course anecdotal evidence doesn't prove anything. I was simply making the point that guys make the jump from MAAC-like conferences to Power 4/5 conferences - and perform pretty well - every year. (Which it sounds like you agree with?)

But just to be clear: When you say "we're better than this", does that mean that you're going on record that you don't want Doty to come play at SU next year?

Was told we are going to give Doty somewhere in the 600-700 range for NIL.
I've been told a few things but dont want to share too much. This is probably pretty accurate. I do know AW has helped out nicely and some other cool things given to him/family. I think the sell here is local kid (commercials etc) will help out and get him some extra $ as well. He had a LOT of schools hitting him up about transferring.

He’s going to be a very marketable kid, both in the Syracuse area and surrounding counties. This is the direction Blair needs move to. Corporate sponsorships. A guy like Doty has a large area to work with.

I was thinking it would be 500K. That sounds about right tho. Wasn’t the rumor mill that he was at 250 for gmac and that was prob taking a pay cut from what he should’ve been making? Kid deserves a raise and seems like is getting a 100-200k bonus for making Duke look silly for 30 mins.

We've had 2 years of Donnie being injured and not living up to his potential when he's healthy. Time to move on. He's too weak and soft.
I'd be surprised if Gerry keeps him.

Folefac is a power forward who shot 38% from 3, 52% overall fg, and 74% from the FT line last year averaging 11 points a game, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
All this as a freshman and the best defender on the team per Gerry.
In the Duke game, he scored 18 points shooting 50% from 3 and made all his foul shots.
Seems good enough to see significant time to me.

Just because he is from Siena dont assume he cant hang with the talent in the ACC.

Also, like Doty, he works his ass off, takes guarding the other teams best player (Kennedy who was the MAAC player of the year in the MAAC final) as a personal challenge he gets excited about and is mad to win no matter who scores.

There is kind of a theme emerging of what Gerry expects and demands in his players.
you may well be correct - but 1 game is 1 game

jyare davis and lampkin also had great showings in the ncaat as well FWIW
***************

roster constructon wont be based on mere talent accumulation but how all the pieces fit together and making sure the entire roster can do all the things necessary

so anyone who thinks gerry already knows what the roster will be doesnt get it...he will based everything on how it all fits together

************

and thats how it needs to be! if you have a PG that cant penetrate like george but rely your ffense on PG penetration, like red, doesnt matter how much talent you have or dont have...

cant have holes in your overall scheme and approach and how that matches to which players you have

I will take it one step further. I think Doty would be an upgrade over Starling. May sound crazy saying it now. But as an overall player, Doty is better than Starling. Remember this post, this time next year and can’t say I didn’t tell you so lol
starling is the losingsest multi year starter (*worst W-L record) in SU history, basically...at least since the 1970s...on HEAVY VOLUME

its not really hard to be an upgrade over him
