Now that GMac is HC, what does next year's squad look like?

This thread is frustrating. Can we at least agree that Doty is the only Siena player that we would target in any other scenario, and that if anyone else from Siena comes here it is only because of GMac? With the amount of NIL money being predicted, I want to be excited about truly program-changing portal acquisitions. We haven't had a star player in years.
There's nothing wrong with acquiring roster depth. Doty is the kind of player that will always help a team win. Moesch is a 4 star.

It sounds like he’s giving us a nice little discount, at least with the NIL number. Folefac will be less than Doty. Kiyan/Sadiq shouldn’t require huge raises….

Plenty of NIL to get a true difference maker or 2. Let GMac pick his PG….. Open the wallet
Point guard and center who can score a bit but defend and rebound better.

The problem is GMAC wouldn’t bring him if he can’t help us. I’m sure he understands the severity of our situation.

Just watch Ben McCollum Iowa tape. Incredible what he's done.
I'm not going to say Fran McCaffery was a total disaster and McCollum's team has had some growing pains - they lost to really bad Maryland and Penn State teams. But as someone who watches every Iowa game like I do every Syracuse game, the difference when things are clicking under Ben and what they were like under Fran is night and day. The offensive execution and passing last night was really impressive when they got going after the slow start.

The term “in the game” shows up in like seven instances in that short article.

Then they used it in the headline as well.

Guess that’s the line of the day.
Paywalled. All I could read is him saying we're a year behind ha,

although its a bit of hyperbole, one guy described doty as someone who doesnt have to score a point to have an impact on a game.

The only certain starter if he returns should be Kingz.
We have to be realistic that the turnaround of our program will not happen overnight. While our NIL has supposedly improved, we will still be competing against stronger programs with bigger pockets that will keep expanding. Also, we are still not a desirable destination, so we will not be getting the cream of the crop from the portal or the top incoming freshmen who will or has decommitted already. I say all that to say, we will be fortunate to be able to keep White, Kiyan, Betsy and some other players and develop them. We had a good team that was poorly coached, as many on the board acknowledged, so I do not believe we need to clear the deck and start over.

We can pick apart our roster and highlight their weaknesses, but the majority of college players are not well rounded. It’s up to coaching to make players better and to build a team that plays off strengths and weaknesses by the game plan - schemes, matchups, substitution patterns etc. I find it funny that some of the posters who are touting the Siena players as the saviors of our program are picking apart and trashing our current players. If GMAC can coach up the Siena guys, why can’t he do the same with our guys who are experienced on a higher level of play?

While I agree with your sentiment in the first part about taking some time to get back to where we all want to be ie rankings and tourney runs that doesn’t mean we shouldnt make the tourney next year.

Making the tourney GMacs first year is non-negotiable for me especially with tourney expansion next year again. That means at minimum 9 ACC teams should be in. So to not make it we’re talking about losing to Cal teams, VT, WF. And really there should be no reason we aren’t beating a mix of Clemson, FSU, Miami, SMU most years. Basically finishing bottom half of the ACC is not ok ever again.

And on your point about keep players. I just don’t agree. You cannot change a losing culture while bringing back so many guys. Maybe 1-2 guys you can bring back but 4-5 is madness. These guys lost to Hofstra and BC, that is just terrible effort. In the NIL era bringing them back is like rewarding guys for losing.

The only way they should be coming back is if we make extreme cuts to their NIL or tell them theyre playing an off the bench role until they prove themselves. There are going to be hundreds of guys that don’t need to be “coached” up to give effort.

McCollum won 4 National Championships in DII, got Drake to the round of 32 in one season, and now has Iowa in the Elite 8. It's the x's and o's, not the transfer portal and NIL that got him here.

How does that translate to SU & Gerry McNamara? Genuinely.
I meant GMac should be taking cues from him. Trying to take what they do on offense and use the best practices from a fantastic coach.

I agree with you. Coaching matters the most. I pointed to him as an example of why having a huge war chest and being a portal beast isn't everything.
