Now that GMac is HC, what does next year's squad look like?

I hope we have the $$$ to target good players on P5 teams. Sure we can find a couple guys from mid-majors who can step up, but let's actually try to get proven talent.

I don't like that people are immediately settling for lower tier players. Aim higher.
$12,000,000 for a roster made up of meh SU holdovers and Siena kids isn't going to get us to the tournament.

Yep - we have to level up here. Unless it’s Dalton Knecht out there need to aim higher where we look. I mean we have to be willing to look at a guy like Burries at Zona if he were to portal etc.

Spoke to Jimmy Lee a few times about this in Vegas last year. What is coachable is less of the mechanics as that can take more than a season and is so built in to the player for years, but the mindset that goes with shooting free throws is what he said is totally coachable.
Im good buddies with JLee and he has told me many times he offered his services when it came to that and it fell on deaf ears

I’m ok with Kiyan. He showed flashes of what he’s capable of. Look for a big sophomore jump. I think he might be our biggest surprise next year. I’m hoping at least. I think GMAC is exactly what Kiyan needs.
I'm OK with Kiyan, too. Disappointed so far, but OK. He'll need all four years here. But right now, I don't trust his shot selection. I don't trust his ball-handling. I don't trust his defense. I don't trust him at the foul line. He showed he wasn't yet ready to play CONSISTENTLY in crunch time against quality opponents. That's what I meant when I said I don't trust him. It's not that he's evil or of bad character.

As far as biggest upside surprise next year, my money is on Sadiq. But it could be Kiyan. I hope they both stay.

I continue to be amazed how willing people are to say goodbye to Donnie. Yes his toughness, defense, passing and other aspects of his game need significant work. But guys who average 17 and 8 in the ACC don't grow on trees. I'd love to see Gerry and his staff coach him up and give him some tough love if the money works.
too bad his defense gave up 19 and 9

In Gerry’s first year at Siena, they got pushed around inside. He made a significant effort to get bigger and stronger on the front line - Goodrick, Folefac and Mulvey. I don’t see any way he doesn’t try to do the same at SU. Among other weaknesses, this year’s team was too small up front, with Kingz essentially a guard, while JJ and George (and Kiyan) were not interested in rebounding. Doty will be a guard who rebounds, whether he starts or is 6th man. Donnie with a 3 and 5 who rebound might be a different player. Interested to if he stays - I would guess he transfers. Folefac will rebound off the bench.

As others have said, PG, SF and C will need to be addressed in the portal - that’s where the NIL boost will hopefully make a difference.

A couple of early names I like that are in the porta, I am sure a ton more will enter in the next week:

Ben Defty looks solid player on the rise
DeSean Goode is someone who I would look at
Darin Smith Jr looks like a score we may need as well

George and Freeman I assume were the 2 most expensive players last year - both probably gone. JJ gone. Will Kyle gone.

That’s a decent chunk of money freed up ON TOP of a bigger NIL bank.

I am sure Kiyan and Sadiq will get more cash but they were already on payroll and it won’t be anything earth shattering. Doty and Folefac will cost but it should not too bad especially if AW helps again.

Should be plenty of cash for a PG, big and wing. I think we could spend high on 2 of the above

Feels like too many people are looking at the portal through the old lens - where it's just lower-level guys looking to move up. There will be dozens of current starters on P5 teams that are going to be in the portal. If we truly are leveling up in NIL money this year, that's where we need to start.

Yep. I’m looking at teams with guys who have a bigger impact despite lower usage too. That’s why seeing who might transfer out from a team like Iowa given they all have basically been playing feed Stirtz all year. Just one example of course but want kids that understand what winning tastes like not just talented kids disgruntled playing for non tourney teams ( George is a good example of that).

I’m not expecting a 1 year miraculous turnaround, but I would be ecstatic if that happened. What I’m looking for is a coach who has a plan, shows he is able to make adjustments, and can convince players to buy in and work hard. Basically, build a culture of discipline, effort, team first attitude and mentality. There’s hope for us when you see hard working coaches in the sweet 16 (Pitino, Izzo, Hurley and Sampson) without a roster loaded with 5 star recruits. I hope that McNamara will become that type of coach.

We need some bigs like Michigan State. Tough, physical big guys who know how to play.

need to be in tournament next year, sorry, there is no grace period.

Correct with that amount Gerry has to get us to the tournament. If we don't then the money will start to dry up. When you are getting 11-13 million you need to get that team into the tournament. If he fails we will not get 11-13 million the following year.

Something else here- if AW somehow gets back in the fold then you let him keep the NIL deal for Doty and then see if everyone can get on board with say you want a big time player and maybe need to over pay a little and AW can be that guy who you work with individually. That’s what he wants and loves because if floats with his way of doing business. Find a way to make it work and he doesn’t have to be pooled together with others everyone just has to get their role in all this.

Even so, it might not be "mechanics" per se but even as simple a change as lining up on a slightly different spot can make a huge difference.

Guys like JJ and William Kyle obviously require more than just a slight tweak though lol.

Adding on to this post cuz I think it's the closest.

3X Siena guys- Doty, Folefac, Moesch?-->Glue guys and 6th man
2-3X Cuse returnees- Kiyan, Kingz, Sadiq, two redshirts-->Kiyan and Sadiq need to earn their mins and the new staff needs to nip their bad habits. Sadiq same with Donnie and George may not worth a bidding war for.
4-5X Portal - top PG, top C , another shooter, another backup big, one overseas guy

Way too many people posting above are putting together 6 million dollar rosters. Need to think bigger. We should have 10 mil at least.
We will have more than 10 million.

too bad his defense gave up 19 and 9
