Offense, specifically shooting, is a major issue

We have a center who basically can’t be on the court in the last few minutes of a game because hacking him is essentially a turnover for us and a steal for the other team. I think at best he shoots about 30% from the line this year
trust your instincts .and remember your training

  • and dammit if you want victory you have to grab it by its haunches and you gotta hump it into submission! (patches ohoulihan)

I get the point you're making, but I don't entirely buy it.

It's not like we've been sharpshooters from 3 prior to this game.

4-21 (19%)
8-21 (38%)
7-19 (37%)
7-17 (41%)
8-31 (26%)
7-30 (23%)

41-139 (29%)

We were only shooting 33% before we got to Vegas.

29% means we're ranking around 300th in college ball. 33% would be around 190th.

I think it's more likely that we've just been a horrific shooting team, and the lack of rest today didn't help. I don't think that's the cause.
I think you knew the answer before you asked the question. Shooting and FTs will likely be a major issue all season.

should a player get credited with a AIRBALL assist or should it count as a rebound and unassisted score ?

30% from three
56% free throws
Our recruiting continues to be so eph in dumb
Didn't see your post scoosh

Any reason why we have to set a high ball screen with Kyle or run the offense through him at the free throw line? I love Kyle and plays really hard, this isn't a knock on him. This isn't his strength.

On a side note, we were completely out coached in the 2nd half of the Iowa State game...

Because setting screens with centers is what Jimbo did!

This isn't necessarily directed at you - this has always been what Syracuse's offense is. Jim was never a huge draw up plays and X&O people to death. It's always been a free flowing offense that relies on Iso's and 2 on 2 P&R. However, (Sans 2016-Now) Syracuse recruited guys for that style. Guards who could create their own shot and get by defenders off the dribble, and big long wings that run the floor and are athletic off the bounce, playing above the rim.

You can't run a free flowing P&R offense with slow unathletic players, who can't create their own shot or get by anybody - it's simply not going to work.

To add to this. The problem JB had we are seeing this year is. You can’t get a bunch of tall, lean and athletic kids to fit into that offensive style because Marcus camby type players can’t create their own offense. They rely on slashers to pull the defense so they get easy looks. Any slashing we do ends with the slasher still holding the ball as they’re double and triple teamed. Against good teams. Struggling to find offense against weaker teams was a sign of potential issues like it has been for 15+ years.

Update!…

8-28 (29%)

So before we get more “tired legs” rationalizations, we shot our season average today.

Meanwhile, Iowa State, also playing their 3rd game in 3 days shot 45% from three. This is after shooting 44% and 36% the first 2 days.

We’re a horrible shooting team. With guys who all shot better last season.

Something is rotten.

Love Kyle ,his defense and his hustle...but did you notice they did not guard him when he had the ball on the high post...probably because like most decent centers he has no chance of making a 6-8-10-12 foot shot...so teams have 5 on 4 defense against us and a big guy sitting back when our guards just dribble and drive...easy double team ... ...maybe Donnie helps fix that we'll see !

Yep, this is maddening. Plus, Kyle's passing is average at best. Solid for a 5. Donnie would do a great job in this spot as you mentioned. Autry should have been rotating other players players in this spot to draw the defense in.

Freeman (Obviously out today) and white need to be the guys in the middle and Kyle is literally the perfect player to stay on the block and take advantage of lobs when we have the advantage moving towards the rim.

Gmac was the shooting coach. He never was replaced. He’s the guy that got rid of JJ’s awful hitch the beginning of his sophomore year. It’s no secret why that’s regressed.

Too much 1 pass and launch
Too much no pass and launch
Too much iso and launch

We have no discipline on offense.
We have no teamwork on offense.
Even with Freeman, we don't work the post/mid-post enough
Players think once they get the ball, they have to shot (White and Anthony do this alot for example)

X and O's is vanilla just high pick and roll or mid post iso same stuff we have been running for decades.
If you're saying this for all six halves they played, then I disagree. If you're referring primarily to their last half, you have a point. Shouldn't we be discriminant and fair in our criticism?

This is for the last decade, probably multiple decades. We have an offense that worked 30 years ago.

Remember that end of year press conference when JW said it was Red’s decision if he wanted to add more coaches? Red decided, “Nah, I’m good.”

Average passer, at best, really disagree there. If guys could have hit early he would have had 5-6 assist early. Had a nice dime in traffic to Sadiq, I believe. Can also lob from way out to Sadiq. You can run high-low action to him and Freeman because of his passing. Probably above average, at least.

How many teams are running their offense through the 5? This isn't a knock on Kyle. It's bad coaching. Iowa State wasn't guarding him.

When he's healthy again, Donnie ought to be the guy setting the high screen, whille Kyle is in the low post looking for position. That's what the offense should look like.

Kingz, Anthony, JJ, Betsey - set up on the sideline on the wing, then cut and set a pick for someone, and then after setting the pick continue moving to the weak side and look for the open space.

Make the defense move, make them switch. You can do that without solely running the pick & roll.

If Donnie were in that position, it would look much better. Or Betsey.

Big guys who can set a pick, but then can either pop and be a legit threat from 3, can make a pass to the low post, or can dive / drive to the rim.

Agree, but that wasn't happening before Freeman's injury. I think most of us ignored this because the games weren't competitive.

No, they actually did that a lot in one or two of the first few games.

7 for 9 inside the arc vs. Binghamton.
5 for 5 inside the arc vs. Delaware State

2 for 7 vs. Drexel inside
3 for 8 vs. Monmonth.

He shot 36 foul shots in those 4 games - 9 a game!

So I think we see he can be successful inside.

Reds loyalty to JJ will cost him his job.
This team is toast, George is turnover prone and Kingz sure doesn't look like a 43% 3 point shooter. Even if Donnie comes back that's 3 starters including JJ who have been terrible on offense for most of the first 7 games.
