In a few different threads, there have been talks about our offense and whether its under performing, performing adequately considering our opponents slowing the game down and rebounding well, or performing well.

According to Kenpom, our schedule has been the easiest of the power five, and our defense is number 1, so so far so good there.

Against the easiest schedule, our offense is actually 34th out of the power five teams in offensive efficiency. (PPP). Roughly middle of the pack. Again, considering our strength of schedule is the lowest of the power five, we’re probably somewhere between 40 and 50 right now as far as offensive efficiency, all things being equal. That being said, we still look pretty good offensively. But there’s lots of work to be done. I think our defense will wind up being a top 20% of power five defenses and if our offense could get there too then we are a contender.

Here are the things that can’t help but get better:

-We are playing 10 new players. So they should continue to get more comfortable with each other.

-We have five freshmen and sophomores playing key roles. Again that will improve.

-JJ, (according to experts), our best offensive player, has yet to play. And Kingz and George have played well but could still play much better on offense.

Here’s what has to get better:

- Offensive rebounding. We’ve played smaller, overmatched teams and we are only 277th in offensive rebounding. We may be focusing on getting back on defense, but one of our bigs has to crash, and at times there is nobody crashing the off offensive glass at all. A few offensive rebounds and put backs increases your offensive efficiency.

-Free throws. Need to get to 70%. Last game Kingz 0/2 FT (and 1/5 from 3) can’t happen vs P5 for a sniper.

-shot selection. The team needs the same judgment Kiyan has shown.

So certainly the potential is there and I think to some extent we’ve passed the eye test, but the numbers dictate there’s a lot of work to do.

Good post.

I think we are best when we are running. This team is made to run. Our offensive efficiency will be optimized with more uptempo and less half court sets. That starts with defensive rebounding.

More pick and roll with George

Need more of Freeman on the blocks, playing inside out. Less trying to be Kevin Durant.

The more Kiyan plays the better. Hopefully JJ can dish when he drives. Should help Kiyan if JJ plays within himself.

Sadiq and Betsey are the variables that could take this team to next level.

Agree. I hope people take notice of the fact that kenpom is still using prior year biases until mid december.

That means that Syracuse having blown out 3 teams with the efficiencies they have and by an average of +17 above and beyond the point spread which is largely driven by kenpom and other metrics, it makes these 3 teams go down dramatically with their kenpom the same way as ours went up to 49.

Just wait. After every game the prior year kenpom bias goes down a little. As you can imagine our prior year bias is rightfully bad news.

Betsey looked like he was poised to have a great game on offense yesterday. Such a bummer he got hurt. I would have loved to see his potential.

yep was just thinking the same, beautiful drive to the basket and then a smooth and confident 3, hope his ankle heals quickly
